July Meeting! The July meeting will be held at Nacho Mama’s on Tuesday, July 11th – we will be riding a couple of rounds of the mtb trail (meet at the Augusta Canal pumping station at 7pm) - the meeting will start at 8pm at Nacho Mamas! In the event it is raining at 7 or if rain on Monday or Tuesday is significant enough to negatively affect trail conditions, meet at Nacho Mamas for dinner at 7, the meeting will start at 7:30.
Forks Area Time Trail Series (FATTS) – If you haven’t heard about them yet check it out at
sorbacsra.org/TTPoster2006.html This has proven to be a successful way to add new members at other SORBA chapters so encourage your non-SORBA friends to come out – they can join SORBA and try to garner some bragging rights!!! For the SORBA faithfuls some hot, sweaty fun on the FATS and maybe the fastest time! This series ends just before the next SORBA Board of Director’s Meeting so we’d love to report a nice increase in membership from our efforts!!! If you don’t want to ride come on out and volunteer to help with the time trials!
Time Trial #1 – July 27, Skinny
Time Trial #2 – August 3, Great Wall
Time Trial #3 – August 10, Brown Wave
Report on Explore the Trails/National Trails Day/Thunder over Thurmond – Saturday, July 8th – If you missed this event be sure and put it on your calendar next year. Tom Sauret and his wife Belinda presented Bill and Liz Victor with the SORBIE an award for exemplary service to SORBA and mountain biking. We had a great turn out on a beautiful summer day (anything under 90 degrees constitutes beautiful in this area in July J. We had somewhere between 25 and 30 people in attendance (people came and went to different things going on). After a great afternoon ride, the award ceremony was held and we had a great cookout. Around 9 folks hit the trail to a peninsula out in the woods to watch the fireworks. It was a magical experience to be sitting on the edge of the lake in pitch darkness on a beautiful night with a great group of fellow mountain bikers and some hikers watching one of the best fireworks shows around. 30 full minutes of non-stop action (every year they add new things - this year a new type of firework it was nearly white and hangs in the air for a long time just vibrating and hanging there).
Upcoming Work Parties – Both DR mowers are up and running now so once folks slow down their summertime traveling we might can get this work party scheduled!
Trail News – The trails are generally in good shape but there are plenty of opportunities for trail maintenance with lots of overgrowth and trees down here and there – don’t forget to spray or at least check for critters – the ticks are out in full force as are the mosquitoes!!!!
Turkey Creek – One large, large tree down between the 5 mile mark and the end of the trail – mowing needed badly.
FATS – Great – the four finished loops – Great Wall, Brown Wave, Skinny and Deep Step are all opened and in great condition. Please respect trail closed signs if they are posted after rains.
Wine Creek- Good condition but there are quite a few nuisance trees down particularly in the 2nd reroute and the overgrowth is abundant.
Horn Creek/Lick Fork - Great condition and no mowing currently needed! Report of one tree down recently.
Hickory Knob – A couple of trees down but not a big detriment to riding, some lopping could be done but generally the lake loop was in great condition.
Canal Off-Road – Last report the trail is in good condition - overgrowth is already a factor.
Modoc – There are some trees down but the trail is in great condition to ride – it needs a DR mowing.
Long Cane – Last report it was in good condition!
Baker Creek – Good condition.
Bartram (Wildwood) - still closed due to construction.
Keg Creek – Dale Parrot reports this trail is in excellent condition – new bridge in place, the trail has been mowed and trees cut out – it is ready to ride.
Bartram Trail (Lake) – Great condition – some overgrowth in the old airstrip area but mainly be aware of picking up hitchhikers through this area! A couple of nuisance trees need to be removed.
Issaqueena - The main trails in the center section of Issaqueena are all clear and not overgrown. Rapids, Pig Horse, Hunting Arrow, and Double Fork Tree all have challenges although apparently not enough to impede riders but enough to reduce the fun of the ride.
ORA Trail - The word is that this trail is in top condition with great hard pack and no wash outs!!
VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION – I know during these times when we don’t have official work parties going on, things are still being handled here and there as necessity dictates. It can seem like thankless work but know that your efforts are appreciated when you take the time to lop a limb slapping people in the face, stomp back some stickers (even if you don’t stomp them back and just keep riding through them eventually there will only be a few thorns left J), or remove debris from the trail. Your fellow mountain bikers do appreciate your efforts (Hey - a nice addition to your Camelbak this time of year might be those nice, compact, hand-held loppers so when you have to stop to wait for your friends a little trail grooming could keep you from getting bored!!!)
