You need a 9 speed hub. Either laced to the rim you have, or a new rear wheel. A nine speed cassette and a new chain.
And I hate to tell ya, but when you do all that you may a new front chainring or two.
Todd will come along and straighten out what I said that isn't right.

It's more of a job than I would advise doing yourself without knowledgeable supervision regarding the spoke lacing, etc. I would take it to a shop. Not getting frustrated, tearing something up, and having to pay for more parts is definitely worth the money.

In addition the rear frame spacing is different on a bike set up for a 7 speed (130mm versus 135mm) so if you have a steel frame you can probably safely reset it with a 9 speed but if you have an aluminum frame you will be taking a chance.
You may have to do the rear derailleur and shifters as well.
Google Harris Cyclery for more on the subject they generally have good information on those kinds of mods.

I have all this ordered. You see I have an older Haro with acera hubs and alivio components that are way too worn. "Pedal, pedal,slip,slip,catch,pedal....you see the problem..." I am upgrading ( I think!) to a XTR/ Sram combo. I measured the frame spacing and it is 135, so I think I am safe here. But much to my dismay... I am seeing that I will be taking the bike to the shop to have the hub installed...I wonder how much that will cost???

Here is a list of items you need to successfully switch from 7-9 speeds: -Rear hub/wheel ($50-200+) -Front derailleur ($25-75) -Rear derailleur ($30-200) -Chain ($20-50) -Cassette ($35-105) -Chainrings and/or crankset w/new bottom bracket ($80-350+) -Shifters ($50-350) It's too bad that you already have a lot of stuff on the way or I'd tell you to seriously re-think upgrading your current bike and instead buy a new one. By upgrading that many components, especially to XTR/SRAM, you may actually wind up spending close to or as much as the price of a new bike. At least with a new bike you get other components like a fork and other things. Here's a link to an article and chart that shows what you need to convert: www.performancebike.com/shop/sizecharts/howtoupgradeshimano.cfmTo answer your question on how much it costs to build a new hub to a rim; $30-50 labor, $25-45 for spokes and nipples. This doesn't include a new rim which you probably need if you bike is that old. Good luck and support your local bike shops!!! BTW It seems odd that you have 7sp now and you rear frame spacing is 135mm. You sure it's not 130mm which is the standard widths for 7sp.?

If in fact you do have 135mm spacing, you may already have an 8/9 speed cassette body. There may be a 4.5mm thick spacer behind the cassette.
Buy (pun intended) the way, what was the original price?
