Greetings from VA. From what I’ve seen, you all have created quite the fine trail system in you area. Maybe I can swing a visit sometime. Was wondering if any of you trail building / maintaining type bike folks would have any information on Forest Service Saw certification. I live near Roanoke VA and ride Carvins Cove and Douthat State Park quite a bit. The horse folks in VA somehow came up with the funding to get about 60 miles of multi-use Forest Service trails to hook up with the 40 miles at Douthat, much of it to be built next year. I’ve been conversing with the Forest Service Recreation official for that district and we have been discussing ways to maintain these trails once they are established. We agreed that it will have to be a dual effort from the equestrian groups and mountain bikers to maintain it properly. The problem I have is finding information on Forest Service saw certification. Seems the Forest Service in our area is not used to trail maintenance (by them or us). For whatever reason, even they seem to have trouble coming up with info on saw certification. They suggested the Appalachian Trail Conference who puts on 2 or 3 saw training sessions in the spring. When they found out I was a mountain biker, my offer to attend was promptly rescinded. I’m sure they would feel the same about horse back riders. Since many of your trails are on Forest Service land I thought some of you may be familiar with saw certification. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks much to Seenvic and those at the Forest Service who have helped me. Info is now being passed onto FS people in my district that need it. I have also found where I can get the certifcation on the Jeff/GW National Forest. Hope to get my certification in the spring. After that, hope to get a few more interested in keeping those trails clean. Thanks again. CCR

Bringing this topic back up on chainsaw certification. Has anyone heard of any classes scheduled or in the works?

I would also like to become chainsaw certified. My little folding saw works great most of the time, but for the bigger ones ...
