Originally was planning to try to set up a work party to repair the 4th crossing (CCW) on Skinny over the weekend of Feb 22 & 23. If the trails look anything like the yards and road sides around the CSRA we have a whole lot of work to do.
We will keep everyone up to date. Obviously we'll need some scouting and planning to determine the plan of action and best use of our resources (our volunteers)!

Updates on work parties to clear ice storm debris are posted on the SORBAcsra facebook page (no login required). Later today, we will be posting our plan for FATS and volunteer opportunities to help clear Mistletoe, Keg Creek, and FATS this weekend, and possibly over the next one or two weekends. If you are a trail runner/triathlete there may be volunteer opportunities to help support your trail user group too. Thank you for your support.

The following announcement is posted on SORBAcsra Facebook Page (no login, also view on SORBAcsra FB feed on our homepage) FATS work party - Saturday February, 22nd. 9:00AM. Meet at the south parking lot. Many of the service roads may be blocked by downed trees, so it might be difficult to drive to some parts of the trail system. Therefore, we encourage volunteers to BRING their mountain bikes and plan on riding to trail access points and ride while clearing trail. Trail running would be fine too. You could hike, but we'll need a small group of hikers since you may have to do a complete loop, and it will take much longer to hike and clear trail. The plan is to send out two teams of 2-3 riders/runners to each loop. On a given loop, the two teams will leapfrog each other as one team stops to clear branches, tangles, debris. We anticipate some sections of trail will have storm debris every 50-100 feet, while other sections may be clear for some distance. In addition to bringing your mountain bike and helmet (or trail running shoes), each team will carry loppers (we have extra) and folding handsaws (if you have one, bring it). If you want to buy your own folding saw, this is one that works well and many of us carry goo.gl/W3Vovm. Typically, we carry a folding saw and/or loppers in a CamelBak type backpack, so you can ride too. DO NOT bring axes, machetes, chainsaws, etc. If it can't be cut with a folding saw or loppers, note the location (trail, direction, distance, or by GPS) and we will have certified chainsawyers remove it later. To help us plan, please RSVP to dave.sorbacsra@gmail.com and tell us how many volunteers in your group, whether you plan to ride or run, and if you need to borrow loppers or will bring your own folding saw. Expect to spend at least 3-4 hours out on the trail - longer if the loop you're working is worse than anticipated. If volunteer turnout is low, we will slowly clear FATS loop by loop over the next few weekends. Thank you for giving back to the trails and we hope to see you Saturday morning.

FATS work party Saturday, March 1st at 9:00AM. South parking lot. Please RSVP to dave.sorbacsra@gmail.com, so we can have a head count and plan work groups. We’ve found that some loops at FATS are so damaged that it is best to have volunteers walk/hike the whole loop, whereas damage on other loops is spaced out and riding/running is a more efficient approach to clearing debris. Therefore, be prepared to either HIKE a loop and/or BIKE/RUN a loop, depending upon your trail assignment. Since many of the access roads are still blocked, it will take longer, and more effort, to get on/off your assigned trail. Expect to be on the trail for 4-6 hours. To help us form work groups, please be prepared to: • depending upon assignment, walk/hike while clearing several miles of trail • depending upon assignment, bike or run while clearing several miles of trail • bring a folding handsaw or loppers – we have extra loppers to loan out • safely and securely carry tools in a CamelBak or hydration pack while hiking, riding, or running and clearing trail • dress appropriately for weather conditions and physical activity on the trail • bring/wear work gloves • bring water, food, snacks in hydration pack - you will be on the trail and your car will likely be miles away. Thank you for your support and we’ll see you Saturday morning.
