I understand they fall just wanted to make sure people knew the trees were down on the trail. Here lately I have been riding skinny and brown wave because of the trees on great wall. What direction do most of you guys ride Great Wall? I have been riding it clockwise but the last mile or so is pretty brutal uphill. Is it any better in the counterclockwise direction or does it not matter? Only reason I ask is because brown wave to me is a way different monster when you ride clockwise as compared to counterclockwise.

IMO, Brown Wave might as well be two different trails depending on which direction you're riding...the experience is THAT different. Great Wall is fun in either direction...I feel like the climb out traveling CW is longer but more gradual, while the climb out traveling CCW is shorter but steeper-pick your poison. Personally, I tend to like the CW climb out at the end, but prefer to ride all the features (the tight twisty section, drop, Shrimper's Rock, the Great Wall, etc.) CCW, so I'll just end up grunting up the climb out at the end. Generally, people tend to ride everything at FATS CCW, except for Tower....Tower is brutal both ways

I definitly like skinny and Great Wall better in the ccw direction. I don't see how Great Wall could feel more steep coming out in the ccw direction. It feels like I am climbing Everest when I come out in the cw direction. It's still a lot of fun I just am still trying to build up my stamina. I have not attempted tower, deep step and the other one which I can not remember its name right now. I figured I am not ready to die yet. I got into biking to lose weight and I have actually feel in love with riding and I am hooked now. I bought a used FS bike for a good price just to try and see if I would like doing this and now I can not wait to get me a brand new bike with all the bells and whistles. I really enjoy it and fats is a great place to ride. Just hope that one day I can keep up with the rest of you guys.

Deep Step (ccw) and Tower (cw) are the only ones that I stick to one direction the others I love to mix it up since they are great rides either way. I would try DS, Big Rock and Tower. Great trails.

I just don't think I am ready yet for those trails. When I can ride Great Wall and not stop then I will advance to those others. It's the climbs that are killers. I will get there though.

I have been riding since '92 and there are times that after every climb I stop and have to catch my breathe. Nothing wrong with it, let a lone nothing to be ashamed with if you need stop and push. We have all done it and no matter how experienced you are, if you ride a lot you will do it again.

Had a good time and felt good about helping out on a trail system that I enjoy riding on. Just wish I would have had more time than I did. It was also nice to meet some new people. Hope to see you guys on the trail soon.

There was about 2 hours of rain over FATS Friday morning and then another 1 1/2 hours Friday evening. The trails will need time to dry out before they are ridden. Should be good to go by late day today or tomorrow. Thanks!

We have continued to have rain every day this week and FATS has had rain every day, sometimes two or three hours of rain. Scout report from a volunteer doing work on the trail reports it is definitely too wet to ride right now and it will need a couple of days to dry out.
With the Fall's cooler temps and the growth season for foliage slowing very quickly, the trails will not dry out as quickly particularly after several days of rain. Please do not ride the trail. Riding our outlying trails should be fine, they do not get the traffic FATS does.
Thank you!

Word back from scouts is that Big Rock and Tower are good to ride (northern FATS trails).
The other four trails from the Southern trailhead should be good to go as well (expect some soft spots along Great Wall and lower Skinny)!

Just a reminder about the 50K Ultra Run at FATS on Sunday, October 5th.
50K Ultra Run at FATS on Sunday, October 5th
Although the FATS will not be closed, there will be a lot of runners out on the trail during this event. They will not be running on Big Rock or Tower. The course route and the direction the runners will be traveling are listed below. Please do everything possible to avoid user conflicts during the event. Excluding the southern trails at FATS, there is about 125 miles of singletrack to ride in this area tomorrow. This event starts at 8 on Sunday morning.
Race Course: Loop 1: Great Wall Counter Clockwise (CCW) Loop 2: Deep Step (CCW) Loop 3: Skinny (CCW) to aid station on Brown Wave Clockwise (CW) Loop 4: Aid station on Brown Wave (CW) to the remainder of Skinny (CCW) Loop 5 Great Wall (CW) to the finish line

Hope they left Fats in better shape than they did Lcht. Our trails looked like kids got tuned loose with blaze orange spray paint and line marking flags.

I was on GW yesterday. Only had to stop once for a small piece of trash. To be honest, what I saw is that they left the trail (or at least GW) better then what they found it in. Big thumbs up to the trail runners that policed the trails after the race.

Just a reminder that hunting (deer/rifle) season begins tomorrow (Saturday/October 11th). For several years FATS was closed for the first two weeks of hunting season, it will not be closed this year.
Please wear hunter orange for safety. Avoid riding near dawn and dusk when light conditions and visibility are low. There is no hunting on public lands in South Carolina (unless otherwise posted) on Sundays.
FATS was and still is a popular hunting area in South Carolina so stay alert. The deer hunters (rifle) have been out of the woods for 9 months and eager to enjoy the start of their season. The season doesn't start in Georgia until October 18th so trails like Bartram and Keg Creek might be another option to consider for this first week of open season.
No hunting (unless posted) in Mistletoe State Park or Hickory Knob State.
Let's have another safe season!
