The SORBAcsra officers and board of directors (somewhat) proudly present a new fun/fundraising event at FATS. This event series welcomes riders of all skill and fitness levels (so long as you and your bike can ride the designated trails). Unlike many other timed events, anyone can win. Yes, that's not crazy talk, anyone (i.e., hammerhead, fast, slow, medium, young, or old) can win. So, without further ado, SORBAcsra presents the inaugural... Forecast a Ride Time at FATS Predictor Series (FaRT@FATS Predictor)What is a Predictor?
A Predictor event requires participants to predict/forecast their elapsed time to ride a specific loop at FATS – and doesn’t allow riders to use bike computers, GPS devices, watches, or any other device or means of measuring speed, pace, distance, or time while riding the Predictor (we will use the honor system). Accuracy, not speed, of your FaRT counts, so anyone can win. Format of the Predictor Series:The Series consists of 4 individual Predictors, once a week for four weeks. Each Predictor will be one or two trail loops at FATS. Before each Predictor, participants will forecast their total elapsed time to ride the designated loop(s). The difference between actual elapsed time and forecasted lap time (over or under) is your differential time for that Predictor. The winner of each Predictor is the rider with the lowest time differential. For the championship, designation of FATS Master Blaster (i.e., Best FaRTer@FATS) goes to the rider with the lowest average time differentials of their two best FaRTs. Schedule of FATS Predictors: 1. Saturday, August, 3rd 9:00AM - 12:00PM - Skinny/Brown Wave Predictor 2. Sunday, August, 11th 9:00AM - 1:00PM - Big Rock/Tower Predictor 3. Saturday, August, 17th 9:00AM - 12:00PM - Great Wall Predictor 4. Sunday, August, 25th 9:00AM - 1:00PM - Deep Step and possibly another loop Predictor Donation:Donations are not required to participate, but are gladly accepted. All donations will support this event and trail maintenance in the CSRA. You must run two or more Predictors if you want to vie for the title of FATS Master Blaster. Weather/trail protection policy:Protection of the trails at FATS is essential to a successful Predictor series, so there will be no wet FaRTs. Individual Predictors cancelled due to weather or adverse trail conditions will not be made up. In the unlikely event that all four Predictors are cancelled, the FATS Predictor Series will be rescheduled. To protect the trail, riders will be penalized for skid marks that result from their FaRT.

I'm pretty stoked on this, I think it'll be a lot of fun.
Now I need to get out there and ride some so I have an idea of what my lap times are...

It appeals to my warped sense of humor. Not sure who thought of it but kudos to whoever did! Cracks me up! Looking forward to the event and figuring out my ride times. There is some strategy involved. You don't necessarily want to shoot for your fastest time because you could have a mechanical and it would throw you way off. Gotta go for a speed somewhere between comfortable and about 90%.

Is there a special category for Old Farts here?

Is there a special category for Old Farts here? No, not yet. However, if you don't bathe for a while, we might consider a class for aromatic FaRTs.

Will the timing start from the lot or from the beginning of the actual loop?

Will the timing start from the lot or from the beginning of the actual loop? The logistics of staging and timing will be easier if we use the south parking lot for start/finish (at least for the lower loops). For BR/T, we'll probably use the north lot for staging and start/finish. Wondering if we should wait and specify direction of a particular loop at race time? Maybe flip a coin to keep participants on their toes?

Just an idea, why not open it up to the trail running community also.

Just an idea, why not open it up to the trail running community also. I think we should first worry about getting it up and running smoothly the first year. But, sure, if the trail runners want to ride their bikes, they are more than welcome to participate too.

Dates and times for each predictor have been added to the first post in this thread. The specific direction for each predictor will be determined the morning of the event. Donations to participate are encouraged, but optional. Good luck and, weather permitting, have fun.

The first FaRT Predictor will be Brown Wave and (some or all of) Skinny. Exact route and direction of travel to be determined the morning of the event.
This event is free to IMBA/SORBAcsra members and nonmembers, but donations to SORBA-CSRA, as well as new memberships, will be gladly accepted at the registration table.
Good luck and thank you for your support.

The inaugural FaRT@FATS Predictor series begins this Saturday, August, 3rd; 9:00AM - 12:00PM at the FATS south trailhead.
This is a low key, fun, potentially annual fundraising event for SORBAcsra. Show up to the South trailhead at FATS any time between 9:00AM and noon this Saturday, get a number plate, predict your time to ride Brown Wave and Skinny, be sure to leave your watch, GPS, bike computer in your car, and then ride these loops at your own pace.
Free to SORBAcsra members and nonmembers. No one will be turned away. However, if you would like to make a donation, please feel free to put some folding money in the jar.
We'll decide Saturday morning the direction of travel and whether we include all or part of the Skinny loop. We have number plates and we will do the timing.
The rider who most closely predicts their actual ride time wins Predictor #1. The series will continue with additional Predictors (i.e., different loops at FATS) each weekend for the month of August. The best two Predictor times wins the series and maybe a prize. Be there or be square.

It rained at/near FATS yesterday ( sorbacsra.proboards.com/post/23906/thread). We will check train conditions tonight and then decide whether to proceed with the inaugural FaRT tomorrow morning. Stay tuned.
