Does this mean there won't be an ETT on National Trails Day to Long Cane Horse Trails like in the past?

That is correct. Most SORBA chapters use National Trails Day to do big work parties, we have always used that as a day to honor our volunteers with a ride and picnic (in the most recent years we have held it at Long Cane Horse Trails). The need to begin repairing HKSP's Lakeview Loop as soon as possible is critical. We hope that by scheduling it on a day intended to be a celebration of our trails will hopefully draw attention to our need for volunteers. We are planning a great cookout at the Big Red Barn in conjunction with this work party with HKSP and race promoter Andy Kennedy supplying the food so come on out and join us. We'll have plenty of rides and picnics going forward once we have this behind us!

The trail assessment was completed by the trail builder this past weekend and we have a lot of work to do (more on all that later). What we do need now is for people to commit to join us for National Trails Day on June the 1st to work towards the restoration of this trail (see the poster below). There will be a cookout at the Big Red Barn after the work party and we will be drawing for some nice schwag and prizes that have been donated from the companies/organizations below. We need a good turnout, this will be our first major work party of the year and it's National Trail Day! If you can help (bring your friends - you don't have to be a member of SORBAcsra to participate or make it a family outing. We will provide the tools and instruction. Sign up at: SurveyMonkey

Need some motivation to come help out at the work party? Here's some! Southern Wheelworks, in conjunction with Industry Nine, will be giving away a pair of custom MTB wheels built around Industry Nine's new Torch Classic hubs to a lucky volunteer! This wheelset is valued at approximately $900. These will be fully custom and built specifically for the prize winner: the best rims, spokes, and nipples for that particular person will be paired with the Torch Classic hubs in whatever color the winner wants. The hubs are available in every configuration imaginable: single speed specific rear, Lefty front, thru-axles, quick release, and with either a standard or XD driver body for use with SRAM's 1x11 drivetrains. In other words, no matter what kind of bike you have, there's an I9 hub for you. The Torch series hubs feature Industry Nine's instant engagement 120 point freehub mechanism, new lower drag seals, convertible axles, and low weight. They come in a wide variety of colors, and are made in the USA (in Asheville, NC actually). The Classic style hubs use standard steel J-bend spokes, not the proprietary (aka hard to source, and expensive) alloy spokes used in the I9 complete wheelsets. To be eligible to win you must attend at least two work parties. Rims are limited to alloy options (Stan's, WTB, DT Swiss, etc) - the winner can upgrade to carbon fiber if they can cover the price difference. Good luck!

Awesome! What is the deadline for participating in the workparties/when will the winner be selected? TBD. There will be at least two work parties for HKSP, and maybe (probably?) three. The winner will be selected at or after the last work party. There are a lot of other really cool prizes from the other sponsors, and the wheels will not be the only thing that requires participation in multiple work parties.

There are a lot of other really cool prizes from the other sponsors, and the wheels will not be the only thing that requires participation in multiple work parties. DG is correct. We are thinking that there will be at least two work parties; one large one on June, 1st and, depending upon how much trail repair gets done/remains, a second work party will be scheduled reasonably soon after. After the second work party, if there is still more trail repair work that can be done by hand we will have third work party. We are asking folks to RSVP via survey monkey (see link in earlier thread) for June 1st so we can efficiently plan the work groups, designate trained group leaders, and, of course, make sure everyone gets fed. We hope to give away a lot of schwag at each of the work parties. Some of the more special prizes will be up for grabs to folks who volunteer for two or more work parties. If we end up having three work parties, we may give those folks volunteering for all three work parties an extra chance. The more someone volunteers, the better the chance for bigger toys. We have commitments for a bunch of cool stuff, from a lot of sponsors. As soon as they come into my possession, we'll start announcing more details about what will be on the goody table.

Dumb question, but what should I bring for the trail work? I've never been to one of these.

Dumb question, but what should I bring for the trail work? I've never been to one of these. No, that is a very good question (there are very few dumb questions). Generally, you want work gloves, comfortable clothing (i.e., warm enough, cool enough, hat, sunscreen, moisture wicking fabrics, bug spray, suntan lotion, etc.), and hydration. We try to provide all the necessary tools from our tool trailer. In this case, the SC PRT is loaning us two tool trailers too. For a lot of the work that we will be doing, a flat nosed shovel will be useful and, depending upon the volunteer turnout, we may ask some folks to bring their own if they can. As we get closer to the work party date, we'll post/email more detailed information and/instructions. Lastly, we have experienced trail workers leading each group. You show up, we teach, you learn, we all work, we all eat, and maybe you leave with some schwag. You meet lots of great people, feel good about contributing to the trails you ride, and, after volunteering for a few trail repair/maintenance work parties, you will have a new found respect for the trail and will look at it much differently the next time you go riding (particularly when you start recognizing sections that you worked on realize what a good job you did or that it might need more fixing in the future). We look forward to seeing you on National Trails Day. Thanks.

Really nice Dustin!!!
We currently have 22 people signed up for the June 1st work party. That is certainly a start but won't get us very far down that trail in terms of repair. Check over your schedule and more importantly invite your friend(s) - from years and years of doing trail work I will tell you it is even better if you bring a friend(s) with you! And please do spread the word even if you are not able to come for some reason.
