Hickory Knob Lake View Loop has about 10 trees down. Not many of them are riders by anyone's stretch of imagination. The Turkey Ridge Loop has two non-riders down.
As usual, both loops are a blast to ride. Love this trail. So well worth the drive!

Thinking about riding this trail this weekend. Would it be worth the drive, even with the currnet non riders [trees]? I need to get some time in here to prep for the X terra in MAR, but don't know if it will be a good weekend for the trip, also how does this system hold up to the rain? Looks like we may get some more this week and I don't want to do any damage to the trails if they are too wet to ride.

10 trees down even if you don't want to ride any of them shouldn't slow you down much over 7 miles of riding. Since Hickory Knob doesn't get an excessive amount of traffic it should be fine by the weekend if we get rain on Thursday (as long as we don't get an excessive amount of rain).
I'm sure there will be seeps here and there (the water table still seems a bit up on the trails we have ridden) just be sure to stay to the middle of the trail when going through any wet or damp areas.

I am sure some of the trees can be navigated by some, but unless you can fly (I cannot), you will walk a few times. No big deal. I try to treat them as cyclocross obstacles, as none of them are above knee-height. HK holds up well to the normal rain, especially since it does not get the traffic that many of our other trails get. It is not an "old school" trail, but has been around for over ten years and rolls really well. 2012 Xterra at HKSP. Wet but fun.

Don't forget that the next Explore the Trails ride is at HKSP, on Feb 2nd.

Fellow SORBA (ATL area) here. Just a quick question from a HKSP noob... Is this just a drive up, park the truck and hit the trails SP? or is there a fee and/or pass needed ? Would like to head over soon and prep for Xterra too as previous poster mentioned..
Thanks

Correct. HKSP and one other SP have a restaurant that pays its own way. If visitors have to pay to enter, the ones just coming to eat may not come as much. That is why HKSP is fee free and other parks are not. I think the other SP may be Myrtle Beach SP but I may wrong on that.
This was told to me by Todd Rexrode when the fees came to BCSP and not HKSP.

What is a better choice for riding tommorrow, Hickory Knob or LCHT given the rain we got last night and are getting today? Or would it be better to wait untill Saturday/Sunday/Monday. I have the day off and I don't want to waste it.

Not the LCHT. We have gotten over an inch of rain and the trails will be in no shape to ride. Try Wine or Turkey if not HK.

Six of us showed up today and cleared approximately 20 trees off the trails. All three are clear. Good day overall. Looking forward to the EtTR at HKSP.

Azdrawdy and Yeti Chick camping at HKSP this weekend have had time to do a preliminary assessment of the trails. Lots of trash - gel packs, paper cups, signs attached to trees but could only access Lake Loop about 1/2 mile in due to trail condition more later.... I shifted the pics into another album and promptly lost the link - they have been reset!

SORBAcsra has been in contact with the folks at HKSP and it seems that there was no language in their contract with the race promoter about weather cancellation and repairing trail damage due to the race. We are working with HKSP to assess the extent of damage. Once the assessment is completed we will work with HKSP to effect a plan to repair the trail. If anyone has a high level contact at HKSP or the Xterra race promoter, please contact dave.SORBAcsra@gmail.com.

That doesn't look all that bad really, considering the conditions and number of racers.

Pictures never do it justice--they minimize the damage. What you see in the pictures is over and over and over and over. In the last 2 pictures, if you look at the next corner or ahead on the trail you can see where the next mud ruts start and run for a long ways. There was little dry space between the sections of ruts. One of the rangers came by our campsite this morning to talk with us about the trail, and even told us some hikers had reported how difficult it was to hike the trail. Many of the ruts are 6" deep. For those of us who know this trail, there is a huge difference. You honestly have to see it yourself to assess the damage. The ranger will be walking the trail on Wednesday, and will be working on "event policies" that include rain dates and alternative routes. This trail needs a lot of repairs. Michael and I have put a lot of work in this trail, and right now it is very disheartening.

That doesn't look all that bad really, considering the conditions and number of racers. This trail is absolutely crushed. Foot after foot, yard after yard. This trail does not exist as it did a month or so ago. It will take more hours to bring it back that the majority of people are willing to volunteer. I just sincerely hope that we have enough volunteers to bring it back. For-profit events and promoters do not care about "our" agenda. Period. If you want an example of this, take an afternoon and go ride HKSP. Report back here. Pro and/or co. Michael

Daniel and I just came off the Lake Loop about 8pm, decided to slide by coming back from our Easter weekend out of town. We hiked the entire Lake Loop and we were shocked - I had my GoPro, iPhone and camera with me - keep watching here for the rest of the story and I will tell you it isn't good. We were at that trail's grand opening in I think 2002, so sad to see the damage today. Drawdy's have it down correctly.
