Only had limited time but did have the opportunity to take in a few of the mountain biking trails on at Oak Mountain on Saturday - a section from the north trailhead we had not ridden before - Dog Cat Snake, Rock Garden, Garrett's Gulch - this state park looks like it has everything for an active family to enjoy. Mountain biking, trail running, hiking, horseback riding (with designated trails for the various activities), boating (canoes, kayaks, paddle boats), golfing, etc.
Great changing room at the north trailhead - a Boy Scout Eagle project -
A nice pump track located near this section of trail -
Great signage -
An alternate line along the trail -
This is a section of the trail called Rock Garden - a bit of whimsy here - the trails up there have plenty of rock here and there so this was a funny addition -
Despite the leaves on the trail, it is ridden enough there was no problem following the trail - its proximity to downtown Birmingham I am sure is a factor -
We did not ride the section called Lightning but it was designed for advanced riders, liked that it gave plenty of warning and had a filter at the start of the trail -
This drop at the end of the filter was at the start of a decently steep drop onto the trail
Their really nice golf course -
Looked like some good horse facilities (again they have their own trails in the park) -
The easier trail around the lake -
Double Oak Lake from the trail -
Along Seven Bridges trail -
Paddle boats, canoes, kayaks at Double Oak Lake -
They also have a couple of their cabins designated as pet friendly, also a nice waterfall, a treetop nature center, camping - regular, equestrian and back country, fishing and geocaching - I'm sure I've missed some things but it appears they are trying to provide as wide a variety of outdoor activities as they can. Worth the visit if you find yourself heading in that direction!
