Just wanted to give a shout out to the morons who take their dogs on the trails, let them take a dump in the center of the trail and leave it there for others to enjoy. Passed 6 folks on GW who had to stop and clean it off their bikes. Only passed one trail runner with a dog Saturday. I hope it wasn't her. It is morons like this that give all dog owners a bad name. Can't say on a public forum what I'd like to! Hundreds on FATS this weekend. Meet folks from all over NC, GA and FL and those are just the ones I met. Runners, hikers and bikers. Except for the dog Sh** >:(all I heard were comments about what a wonderful place and how well maintained the trails are. Even from the guy with the bloodied and busted face and the chap from FL who had a spectacular crash on lower skinny in front of us . He even raved about it after the crash. ;D CSRA SORBA is one of the best. Hands down.

Some people make bad decisions. One guy had his dogs on the trail at the bakers dozen Nearly caused dale (I think it was dale anyways) to crash. Oh, and glad some folks got out to ride this weekend. I worked most of the day Saturday and Sunday.

We should ban dogs from everywhere. That'll solve the problem.

Nevin and I both had to stop to get shit off our bikes, on Saturday. I noticed it coming off deep step while we were waiting for Doug at the intersection and Nevin noticed it on Great wall. Nevins was definitely Dog shit. My bike had some Black sticky tar like shit stuck to it, Maybe a coyote or raccoon.??
"shitty day on the bike, is still better than a great day at work"

I guess my point is that its completely unrealistic to expect dog owners to keep their off-leash dogs in sight at all times. Plus, I just don't understand this knee-jerk reaction to dog sh!t, probably because I grew up in a place and time where there were no leash laws. You kept your eyes open and, when that wasn't enough, you cleaned your tire or your shoe. Whatever, it wasn't the end of the world. It wasn't even that big a deal. Do I want dog sh!t everywhere? Obviously not. But your reaction is overboard IMO. Sh!t does, indeed, happen.

True. Dog I saw was on a leash though. Hence, lazy dog owner.
Maybe I just expect too much from people.

Yall seem to think the trails belong to hunters, mountain bikes, deers, trail runners, etc. Sorry but been mountain biking for 30 years and have always done it mostly for the enjoyment with my dogs. My dogs are trained, on electronic collars and follow right behind my bike. If they drop off, they are either excusing themselves or getting tired.....I clean up after my dogs if its anywhere near a trail...plus one only goes about 4 miles max, the other can go maybe 10-15.
Not to say there can never be a rude rider either; there were girls flying down from the rock on gravel road about 4 abreast, I (without dogs) had to dive off the road for cover.
I think you need to talk about responsible outdoormen and outdoor pets not just crucify the pet and the owner of a pet that enjoys mtn biking.
Last I heard, Sorba didn't acquire the Bakers Dozen gravel roads and trails either....Wasn't that on a Saturday during hunting season?

The sticky, black, tar-like scat on the trail might be a turkey - I have seen it and luckily mostly avoided it on various FATS trails - typically has no shape (just a little 3" or 4" pool of goo). Deer leave pellets like a rabbit just much larger. Both coyotes and raccoons are more dog like. If a normal animal (dog, coyote, raccoon, etc) left scat on the trail like that would have to be after ingesting something that really, really upset its stomach or it would have internal bleeding - given that I've seen it on several trails don't think that is the answer so turkey seems the most likely choice. But if we have some local experts out there that can shed other light?? People with dogs still need to take the time to at least kick if off the trail if their dog does get the urge and the owner is aware of it - you don't always see it in time to avoid it! Courtesy amongst all the trail users is greatly appreciated by all!

Fox and coyote scat are the same shape as domesticated dogs. The foxes is slightly smaller in diameter than the coyote. goo sign is seeing hair or berries in it. Also, like most wild animal scat has very little odor. Domesticated dogs smell bad because of the food we feed them.
I have spotted deer, rabbit, bear and coyote/fox out at FATS. I never noticed dog crap though. At least we don't have to ride through moose scat.

From us that mountain bike with our dogs, have them trail trained (even on electronic collars) and pick up and move their poop; if any, to those that bitch about ALL dawns being on the trail :
