Couple more shots... We had awesome volunteers. You've got me trained. I always look forward to your pictures because you capture the moment perfectly. Thanks.

Thanks for the kind words. Every year I consider not riding and just shooting, but I have always enjoyed the BD. Jeff's comment on section 2 is on the mark. The beginning of that section just jack-hammers the heck out of you. That is the only section of the entire SORBA/CSRA trails that I have wondered what it would feel like to hit with a real DH bike MD

Great event. Thank you to everyone involved. Especially Dustin. I'm sure he spent all day Friday taping the course.

Great event. Thank you to everyone involved. Especially Dustin. I'm sure he spent all day Friday taping the course. Nope, I don't deserve the credit. BrianW did the taping. The SORBA officers did most of the planning. The usual suspects, Susan, paul, dale, John T., the drawdy's and the Allens.

There was another photographer there as well. Before the race he was asking about the course route and places where he could see the riders. All I know about him is that he was driving a white Sprinter van. He's the owner if Ibex Bikes, I'll find out where his pics are. What's the story on Ibex? I looked at the website and for the build kit you can get on some of those, the price seems too good to be true. Anyone have any experience with them?

What's the story on Ibex? I looked at the website and for the build kit you can get on some of those, the price seems too good to be true. Anyone have any experience with them? They're a direct to consumer brand, similar to the bikes sold by Bikes Direct. They don't actually design anything themselves, they pick the frame out of a catalog and pick the components to go on it. IBEX is just one dude, he's the whole company. Their Maroc carbon 29er is dang near identical to the Raleigh Talus. Very obviously made by the same company, all the tube shapes are identical, as is the geometry. They have different BB's though. The carbon lay ups might be different, leading to different feeling rides for each...but...I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't.

Some friends and fellow SORBA members sent me a great write-up that was in Greenwood's Index-Journal paper this past Sunday. They nor I could find it on line or I'd provide a link but I have the clipping. Really good! We really need to work on some press coverage if we do this again.

There is not an online link but Ben Breiner has graciously allowed me to post the article -
Taking the Long Ride - Baker's Dozen event challenges 3 Greenwood cyclists -
By BEN BREINER bbreiner@indexjournal.com
Thirteen hours is a long time. It’s nearly a full day, enough time to runerrands, pick up the kids, make dinner and maybe catch a movie if you’re not too tired. A block of time like that has near limitless uses. But the way Greenwood’s Ernest McCallum filled 13 hours Oct. 22, that was a departure from the mundane.
The 45-year-old mountain biking enthusiast, along with teammates John Pace and Tom Austin, spent 13 straight hours riding at race speeds in the Baker’s Dozen event at the Lick Fork Recreational Area in Edgefield. Hosted by the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association, the Baker’s Dozen challenges riders or teams of up to four to run through as many eight-mile laps during the course of a 13-hour day.
McCallum and his team cracked out 18 total laps, finishing in 12 hours, 10 minutes and 27.2 seconds and besting the closest three-man team by 17 minutes.
“I think each of us rode six laps, which is 48 miles,” McCallum said.“It’s not really a tremendous distance of riding in 13 hours, but it’s at race pace because it’s based on time.”
McCallum also made sure to give credit to SORBA, saying the organizers did all the work, and the riders just showed up for a good time. The best sign of that: the prize is not a true trophy or plaque. It’s a beer stein.
He said the win was one for the older guys, as all three were between 45-50 and were competing against mostly younger riders. McCallum is an orthodontist in Greenwood, Austin an attorney and Pace works at Solutia. The trio rode on single speed bikes rather than multi-gear, with the logic fewer gears were more efficient for them. The trio was one of few representatives from Greenwood, as this was the first time the event took place since 2008 and participation was down.
McCallum said there was not much of a buildup in terms of training, mostly because he and his teammates were already so steeped in the world of mountain biking. “We just ride a lot,” McCallum said, noting the area had a lot of good places to ride. “We ride year-round. It’s a matter of just kind of ramping it up. ... Probably four-six weeks before, we start really lengthening our rides and that sort of thing and kind of build it up from there. “Even if you’re riding a lot, you have your peaks and valleys. And you try not to have your peak six weeks before something like that.” McCallum started riding when he was a teenager, but didn’t get into mountain biking until 10-12 years ago. He had done it as a way to stay in shape during the winter, but then, something else changed his approach.
“The appeal to me is the lack of cars,” McCallum said. “Trees generally stay put, and trees don’t talk on cellphones, and to me, personally, that’s just what got me into it. After years and years of being on a road bike, I just got scared of getting killed by a car.”
Cycling is generally a sport where youth is less of a factor. Riders slowly build stamina and skill during the course of their biking lives. McCallum put it simply: “You get better as you get older.”
On the trails for 13 hours, that can come in handy.

Went out today and hit HC for some laps. The leaves were deafening! What a great way to spend my birthday and Thanksgiving! Removed all of the orange tape. Very thankful that the venue was used for BD11.
