I'll be "leading" an intermediate/advanced skills clinic at the Explore the Trails Ride on August 6th at Modoc. I say that I'm "leading" because I've got plenty to work on myself ;D Meet at the Modoc parking lot and be ready to ride at 8am We'll stop at all the technical features and let everyone take a few tries and offer some tips/advice on how to best negotiate them. We'll work on the creek and ditch crossings, log hopping, descending and climbing switchbacks, and choosing a good line on steep/rough climbs. ALL skill level riders are welcome! If you're not comfortable with a certain feature just walk it. We may or may not ride the entire length of the trail, we'll just play it by ear. The focus will be on improving your bike handling skills. Hopefully we can get Catalyst to come out and teach us all how to ride UP that rock in the first creek crossing A few of the things we'll work on:

If I am in town, I plan to go to this ride. But not at 9:30. Damn, that is late and hot for this time of year.
My original thought was to start at either Key Bridge or 283 and do a big connector ride of some sort.
I may come along and just do this with you. But I'd want to start earlier than 9:30 as you said.
All depends on if I am in town or not.

and of course, I got all excited, check the calendar, only to be let down. We are out of the country, so that makes a BIG no for me. :-(

Great idea and would be fun. And I've got plenty to work on too, but we'll be out of town to visit Stacey's dad who's still recovering from surgery. Anyone know any mountain bike trails in Beaufort, SC? ...besides the sand traps on Hunting Island? Remember, momentum is your friend!

I think combining a skills clinic with an ETTR is a great idea. Working on skills on a ride with real trail obstacles instead of in a lot with boards and blocks simulating them would be a great help. Also, I'm always leary about working on things during a ride because I'm usually alone and very cautious. Having experienced riders around to help out would be fantastic.
Generally on a ride, even a slower paced ETTR, most of the experienced riders tend to be way up front, away from where the least experienced riders are when they are dealing with an obstacle that they need some improvement on, which turns it from a learning experience into just something to walk so they can keep going and catch up. It'll be slow paced for sure, but I think the benefits of stopping and practicing things in a group would be tremendous.
One of my fondest memories of a group ride was several years ago when we rode LCHT and the lead group held up at a stream crossing waiting for everyone to catch up. It seemed like we spent an hour at that one spot just watching and encouraging people to ride the stream crossing instead of walking it. Some tried it several times if I recall correctly. I'm not sure, but I think it was one of the first group rides for SORBA-CSRA at LCHT, although it may have been before the official ETTR rides were started.
And I agree with Bill, I think an earlier start would be best.

Forgot to mention, I'm gonna try my best to make this ride. I haven't ridden Modoc in ages. I'm also in for hanging with the skills clinic to brush up on some things.

Glad to see there is some interest in this.
How about we start at 8am? Actually ride into the woods at 8am, not meet up at 8am.

Would this be something for a beginner to attend? My son (16 yrs. old) has only been riding for about 6 weeks. He's ridden a couple of the Fats trails and the intermediate part of Bartram trail. Will this clinic be too advanced for him? Thanks

Will this clinic be too advanced for him? Thanks He's certainly welcome to come! There may be some features he is not comfortable trying yet, but he can simply walk them. For example, he may not be comfortable riding down the big rock drop at the first creek crossing, but he could still try some of the other creeks or work on getting over logs. No one will be pressured to trying something they're not ready for.

Thanks for the quick reply. Not sure if this is the right place to ask these questions but what is the best way to get involved? He is planning on possibly attending next month's Sorba meeting (if that's okay) and we would both like to get involved with trail maintenance. Just not quite sure how to get started. Thanks again.

Some great ways in getting involved are just going to the Explore the Trail Rides and keeping an eye out for the work parties. Great way to meet fellow riders and learn some skills. it is also amazing how much you learn by following other riders no matter how much (or little) experience you have.
Another thing that many do is bring along a small folding saw and/or some pruners and when use them when needed. it is amazing how much can be done with those two things.

And we'd love to have you at the meeting - August 9th 7pm to eat and socialize - the meeting itself starts at 7:30pm. I'll also be happy to send you our monthly newsletter for a couple of months and then if you really want to help, join SORBA-CSRA. You can be involved as little or as much as you'd like. You can send me an email to sorbacsra.org if you'd like me to send you the complimentary newsletter!
