Explore the Trail Series Ride and Picnic in celebration of National Trails Day at the Long Cane Horse Trail near Greenwood , SC allow about an hour and 30 minutes from Augusta . Meet at10:00am at the Fell Horse Camp (see directions below). We will be serving lunch (hamburgers, hotdogs and sides) at shortly after noon at the pavilion at the Fell Horse Camp. Members and non-members are welcome! Upstate SORBA and newly added Midlands SORBA chapters will be joining us.
This trail system is a great flowing trail cut through varying terrain - tremendously fun and well worth the drive! You can easily put in 14 miles but many do the entire 25!
Even if you have not ridden this trail before, please join us, the Greenwood SORBA-CSRA members are always fantastic hosts and they do do an excellent job of maintaining this trail which makes it an even better ride. We will have some ride leaders and people sweeping and with the various ride options available everyone should have a great time.

What a great idea. Knew about this through the Midlands group, but haven't heard any follow-up buzz (not surprising since I can't make the meetings and usually ride solo). Hopefully there's a good turnout from here (myself included with a little luck) and from the Upstate.

Do they have a forum? Would love to have something posted there if it isn't already.

How technical is Long Cane? Compared to New Bartram or Modoc?

I'm sure some of the guys will jump in here, I have ridden it about half a dozen times, a lot of the trail is fun flowing trail - it has some technical features here and there but not like Modoc - there is one stream crossing that I don't ride and a couple of the logs. Other than that and a section that can be avoided that is just really rooty and dippy...... I would say more like Turkey Creek combined with FATS. We'll have some different ride options as far as length and section of the trail. I think you'll love it if you come out and give it a try! I would take fit novice riders on this trail.

Here is a link to the pics on the Greenwood website to give a little preview of the Long Cane Horse Trail - we have a great group of people that have already committed and I'd really like to see more of the SORBA-CSRA riders come up to check out this great trail system. Truly is a great trail system and you can get as little or as much riding is as you want. Would be great to go and learn your way around. One weekend that was totally rained out down here we went up there on Saturday and again on Sunday because it was dry up there and the trails in great condition it's only an hour and a half away! Just giving support to "you can make the ride on Saturday as short or long as you want!". You can out and back as little or as much as you like. We had a turn around point the time I went and that first section of trail was very easy. A couple of the climbs were a bit of a grind for the unfit (me!), but all in all was no more strenuous than Batram II.

Thanks. That is exactly the info I was looking for. My wife is a beginner. She feels comfortable on Old Bartram but not New Bartram. Sounds like she would do fine on Long Cane. We will have to make a last minute decision. May be leaving town in a hurry for a funeral.

For a beginner at LCHT, I'd start at fell, and ride an out/back of the stuff we built in 2003. The older school horse trail is going to be less beginner friendly, IMHO.

Yes Bill, that was my point; leaving from Fell gives one the opportunity to turn around at any point where you feel you need to in order to get back. That could be 2 miles or 10 or go the whole monty; I turned around somewhere not to far after you come out on the gravel road, go right, then right again back onto the trail. There was some kind of landmark a ways up the trail after re-entering; some kind of "rock" or whatever, and I turned around there.

Just a reminder tomorrow is the deadline for letting me know if you plan to come to the national trails day ride and picnic on Saturday. We have a great group of riders signed up representing the entire spectrum of riding styles and abilities so come on and join us! Right now it looks like next Saturday will be the "cold spell" in a otherwise hot, hot week. I might even throw a watermelon on ice! Dan-angelaallen@comcast.net
This is a great time to bring your non -SORBA friends or if you aren't a SORBA member a good time to come meet some people and check out one of our great trail systems ....long cane horse trail.
