October 1st is Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day - would be so great to get enough people to work the work party that weekend before not to have eye pokers and that tunnel of foliage that you can barely squeeze through (and those nasty stickers) on the airstrip out of the way before that ride.
Looks like we are going to have good attendance for that Oct 1st event!
We will have you out before noontime if gameday activities are standing between you and signing up for the workparty!
Check your calendars and let me know! sorba.csra@sorba.org

Lake Spring has standing water just above the re-route. Maybe 10ft section a few inches deep. Used a stick to make drainage slots. Rest of the trail is bone dry. Also between the 2.5 and 2 mile marker a tree is standing/blocking the trail. Base of it is about 6" but stands about 30-35 ft up. Small ride around is forming.

From Petersburg Trailhead heading east towards West Dam there is only one tree down (not a rider for the majority of riders)...it is just a few feet on the east side of Sailing Club Road. There are 4+ down (of varying sizes) between Petersburg and Wildwood.

Daniel and I removed the two trees just off Sailing Club Road this afternoon - so trail is clear from Petersburg to West Dam.

Charlie Mock and I rode Lake Springs today - the tree that Brian mentioned on Oct 9 is evidently gone which is good but I wish the kind soul who removed it would post up so others don't take the time and effort to haul equipment in.
The water problem: Water is gushing out of a large green box next to Lake Springs Rd near where you can access the trail to the Boy Scout re-route. This is causing water on the trail that Brian describes above. We really couldn't improve much on Brian's drains - thanks - they are allowing the water to flow across the trail there. The tread underneath is fairly hard sand which should hold up pretty well in the short term. Further down the trail is another, smaller area with water. This may be coming from the same source but this spot is normally wet except for very dry times. This has always been very rideable but I would be a good idea to set some bricks in there. Access is good from the fishing dock parking lot. I may have some time next week for that.
I talked to the Columbia County Water Dept today and explained the problem. That box has a pre-programmed flushing operation that they said was in operation and should quit by tomorrow. But I think there may more to it. Flushing operations normally are channeled through some sort of pipe or port. The water we saw today was squirting out of the sheet metal seams of the box which didn't look right to me. The crew chief is supposed to call me in the morning and I should learn some more ...

Met with Columbia Co Water Dept this morning at Lake Springs - my suspicions were correct. There is an atmospheric vent in the big green box that contains a backflow preventer. Water is pouring out of that - 2 - 3" pipe. However, this is downstream of the meter so COE is going to have a heck of a water bill. Talked to COE and they are now plugged into the problem and will have it repaired ASAP.
I now suspect the water on the lower Lake Springs trail is impacted by this event so that should clear up.
The hydrant that used to be periodically flushed is no longer flushed at all since there is a continuous flow to an outfall that was extended last Spring to not impact the trail.
So, no normal operations should cause water on the trail. Thanks to Brian Williams in reporting this - the problem is not easily observed from the road.

I keep an eye on this section and hold off on the armor. The lower spot (between the bridges) may get some attention. In the past this spot did hold some water. Hoping the cleared drain will do the trick though. Thanks Dale for the info.

Robert Burton and I cleared the downed trees between P'burg and Keg Creek so the entire trail system should be good to go for Bike Fest. What a fabulous day to be on the trail!!
BTW - the LS water system was being repaired today.

No water on the top spot on lake Springs and just a trickle the bottom one. After a few dry days it should be fine.
One tree down between the air strip and Keg Creek sign on Bartram. Rode at night and was already on a ride around when I realized it wasn't the trail. Will need a chain saw.
I turned around at the Keg sign because the rain started to come down good. Besides this one tree it is clear to the dam. Not sure of conditions from the 'burg to the sign.

Rode Petersburg to West Dam and back, skipping Lake Springs. Everything looked great, nothing down over the trail, weather was perfect.

Lake Spring cw between where it comes close to the road and where it used to branch off to form the bigger loop ('possum trot?) there is a large tree down. 2' diameter. removed a lot of down limbs between the 'Burg and West Dam. Trail is damp but no mud (12/22)
edit: If this could be notched it may add a nice feature to ride.

Rode to mile marker 10.5 today (12/26) two trees down, one at mile marker 8 about 18" in diameter and a foot or so off the ground. the second is between the metal bridge and the 10.5 marker. dead pine fell the length of the trail. Needless to say, both are non riders.

cut out the tree on Lake Springs - didn't have time to try a notch as it was almost dark when I got there. I'm more inclined to spend the extra time with notches on hardwoods - pine rots out pretty fast.
