New Trail at Hartwell Lake - Come Join Us
Come join us for a day of trail finishing work at Hartwell Lake's Paynes Creek area. This is the best part of trail building and we plan to have a great time getting the trail ready for the grand opening. Bill Victor will be heading up the volunteers from our area!
Saturday, April 23 Schedule
8:30 – 9:00 Welcome & Sign-In
9:00 – 3:00 Trail Work Party @ Paynes Creek Trailhead
12:00 – 1:00 Lunch (bring sack lunch)
3:00p Volunteer Raffle
The Paynes Creek Trail project began in 2005 with discussions between SORBA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) for a mountain bike trail to be located at the Paynes Creek Recreation Area on Lake Hartwell. The project was to be a ‘hybrid’ construction, with SORBA volunteers contributing expertise to the design, layout and final finishing work, and the majority of the trail building contracted to a qualified builder. Unfortunately, hurricane Katrina sapped the funding resources originally identified for the trail building. While the layout was completed in 2006, it took until 2010 to finally identify sufficient resources to fund the construction. The majority of the trial is scheduled to be completed for the grand-opening on April 29, 2011.
No experience is necessary to volunteer at our trail work day. Please plan to bring, gloves, water, and always remember to dress appropriately for weather conditions. All attendees will be responsible for breakfast and lunch on Saturday.
Directions from I-85 Exit 177 (Georgia side of Hartwell Lake):
1. Head south on GA-77 S/State Route 366/Whitworth Rd toward Knox Bridge Crossing Rd/State Route 59 and continue to follow GA-77 S/State Route 366 for 5.2 miles.
2. Turn left at Junction 77 and go 2.2 miles.
3. Turn left at Co Rd 503/Mt Olivet Rd Continue to follow Mt Olivet Rd for 4.0 miles.
4. Turn left at Paynes Creek Road and go 0.8 miles.
5. Turn right at road to trailhead parking lot.
