If you didn't get the opportunity to volunteer for today's work party, GREAT NEWS! we are scheduling a work party for the Bartram Trail for next weekend! The work party will only be rescheduled if it is raining at the time of the work party.
WHAT: SORBA-CSRA Workparty WHEN: Saturday, February 26th at 10am (rain date Sunday, February 27th at 1pm) WHERE: Bartram Lake Trail WORK: Armoring the Big Dip - New Section VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 10 (Bring water and work gloves)
EQUIPMENT NEEDED: 2 good contractor grade wheelbarrows are needed (Dale has a 3rd one)
Work will be done under the leadership of TCL Dale Parrott - the work should take about 2 hours and will involve carrying tools and plasticized landscaping ties into the work site and getting them into place at the big red dip (5 miles out on the new Bartram Trail). There are also several spots within sight of the Big Dip that need deberming. Please respond if you can help with this work party. An access trail has been established to reach the work area.

I would love to help and I have my own wheelbarrow (the 2 wheel kind) that is much more forgiving than the single wheel. It's been a while since I have been in the loop so I guess I just need directions to this particular location.

Great! Here you go - I'll be in touch right now we have 4 of the 10 needed people to conduct the work party hopefully more will sign up before the end of the week............ If you are heading east from Pollard's Corner head east on US 221 (the dam road) for approximately 1.8 miles (you will pass a church on the right) turn left at the power lines onto a gravel road through a metal gate (the gate will be open for work party access) - this is Columbia County Waterworks Rd (Bartram Trail crosses this near the water). Dale will be waiting and show you where to park. The access trail leads about 1/3 mile to the work area and is mostly downhill. or if you are heading west..... from the Petersburg Campground Rd. proceed 0.3 miles west on US 221 (the Dam Road) and turn right at the power lines onto a gravel road through a metal gate - this is the Columbia County Waterworks Rd (Bartram Trail crosses this near the water). Dale will be waiting and show you where to park. The access trail leads about 1/3 mile to the work area and is mostly downhill.

Anyone up for a light ride afterward? I haven't ridden in that neck of the woods in years and desperately need some singletrack to lift my spirits.

Dale -
We have the three wheelbarrows but only 8 workers total, is that enough to move forward with the work party on Saturday?

Dale - We have the three wheelbarrows but only 8 workers total, is that enough to move forward with the work party on Saturday? This isn't Dale but eight people will be sufficient to get the "wood" in and armor that one nasty spot. Not sure if we'll get to many of the other soupy areas that Dale mentioned, but we can surely get that dip armored. MD

Believe the big dip is around the 12 mile point. if I am correct than 5 miles past the "Burg is right.

We will have hand tools but a flat shovel or two will be needed. The Big Dip is almost exactly at Mile Marker 11 or about 4.5 miles from P'burg.
Looks like about 10-11 folks signed up - perfect!! See everyone tomorrow.

The work party was a great success! Dale did a fantastic job of getting everything set up in advance so two hours later we were back out of the woods. Thanks to the 13 volunteers who came out to make this work party a success. That was the perfect number to get the armoring work completed at the big red dip and have some additional folks to clear some dips and drains nearby. The ride afterward was great too and it was especially nice to get to ride the big red dip! The big red dip! Mucking it out! Laying the foundation.... Finishing ..... Testing... Great job!

Dang, you went and took all of the terror out. All I could see from the top was me planting my front tire in the mudhole and doing a beautiful end-over. Ought to be fun hitting that wide open. BTW all, I've been sitting at home with recuperating wife for a couple of weeks. Would rather have been digging in the mud.

Actually we noticed at the top of the hill a really dug in brake mark that ran about two feet down the trail from the top. Looked like someone rounded the corner at a high rate of speed and then realized that there was a real mud pit at the bottom so grabbed some brakes. Hope she is doing well! Seriously it was the perfect number of people and equipment. If you have too many people then people find themselves standing around twiddling their thumbs and that isn't good, people's time is just too precious. There will be plenty of opportunities to volunteer at work parties this year. I have a feeling the bag we use to pull the volunteer winner of the year (name in the hat for each X hours of trail work done) is going to be full this December!

Thanks for the camera work AA. Also appreciate all the hardy souls that showed. Everything was accomplished that was planned. We had more than necessary for just the dip, and many, many others fanned out to hit other dips. We rode later and the results were outstanding Good job laying out the work party DP. It went very well. MD
