I'm assuming the guy who is building the "platform" down by the river is the same one that has strung up a zip line. It starts at the top of the railroad ties and goes around 150ft towards the fire pit. The danger part is that the zip line dips down to head/neck level half way down the railroad ties on the right side and is also green so it can't be seen. Especially at night. So let me know, "un-official canal officials", if y'all are going to contact the Canal Authority regarding this hazard or will you wait until someone gets hurt? Let me know and I'll call them myself. Be careful everyone!

Nothing to stop you from calling them. You've seen the zip line yourself and can explain it best, so it makes sense that you would call.
Thanks for the heads up. That would suck to get clotheslined!

Not wanting to step on any toes. The canal trail has become a prized possesion by a few and I thought maybe they'd want to take action. Just staying in my place and letting others do their job. So I called and alerted the Canal Authority about the situation, the platform, and now the zip line. If anyone sees anything both positive or negative, please post it and let me know and I'll call them back. Back to my hole I go. One tip, if anyone sees anything going on like this, don't wait for over a month to report it.

Does the Canal Authority have a certain contact person regarding who to call to report current dangers. Whats the phone number to Canal Authority.
This should be a priority for SORBA-CSRA club and Canal Authority to do all they can to make this trail safe. Of all the trails in the CSRA you have more kids, women, single riders enjoying this trail. If someone is setting up a zip line to harm someone, the law needs to be notified.

We have been working very closely with the Augusta Canal Authority for years on this trail system and they are very responsive to anything we report to them. I'll get word to Paul since he corresponds with them fairly regularly.
Anytime something like this comes up definitely the quicker we know it the better. Don't want to have someone get hurt down there and then have access closed to everyone!
I've been trying to follow the forum more closely but for quicker response sending an email directly to Paul or after December Susan or any of the SORBA-CSRA officers or even me (dan-angelaallen@comcast.net) and we will get the ball rolling quickly. They aren't always on the forum and things might be missed.
Thanks for the heads up!

The fastest way to get info to them on safety related issues is to call them as soon as you're aware of a problem. 706-823-0440 - (save it in your phone so you always have it handy) www.augustacanal.com/

I've already called as of this morning. Please make a note of it. The ball should have been rolled a month ago.

I only went to the canal yesterday for the first time in a long time and saw it. Who knows how long it's been hanging there. My meaning was that someone should have called the Canal Auth. when this guy was discovered a month ago. I had no idea about him until I read about it on the forum over this past weekend.

I called and left them a message about the homeless guy back earlier in the month - I wasn't connecting the two as being the same person when this thread started about the zip line guy - generally those kinds of folks come and go before you even know they are there. If there is someone hanging around they will definitely jump on that situation.

I was informed tonight from the Augusta Canal Authority that the zip line cable has been removed.
Thanks to all those involved for getting this accomplished.

I'm the one who first reported the transient/homeless guy on the forum, but it was only a week and a half ago....I meant to call the Authority, but forgot due to work and packing for an upcoming trip. Sorry for dropping the ball, and the Authority's phone is going into the cell for future use At any rate, in my experience, Angela is right, he probably got tired of building his "cabin" shortly after I met him, especially with it being so cold lately. I would even hazard a guess that he probably didn't build the "zipline" seeing as the homeless are generally short on funds to buy the materials for a zipline, (unless of course this was the result of a theft, but if it were stolen, anything made of metal tends to end up in a recycling center for the cash) and I would think his route in/out would be closer to the southern entrance as it is more accessible to downtown and its shelters and soup kitchens. Seeing as how mountain bikers aren't the only ones using this trail, I would think it is more likely that some teens put up the zip line for their own amusement.....

And just as hopefully a final note (or at least the next chapter) the zip line was removed by the Augusta Canal Authority today!

As of this afternoon, the guy with the machete was still down there. He was chopping on trees, the tree I saw him working on was alive and right by the trail (near the trailhead). If he was building something I couldn't see what/where it was.

I spoke to the Augusta Canal Ranger a little while ago and told him what was going on - can you call me at (706) 799-0209 - I need some additional information. Angela
