I just broke my chain and was looking for recomendations on a new one. My bike is a 2011 Trek 6000 that came with a Sram PC 951. My budget is quite tight so I am not looking for anything exotic. Can I upgrade to a little better chain without breaking the bank? Thanks!

If the one you have can be fixed, fix it and put it back on the bike.
That is going to be the least expensive fix.

Sram chains have never given me any trouble. Even if you can't fix what you've got I'd just buy the same thing. And maybe learn to be just a liiiiiiittle more delicate when you shift.

New bike. Maybe the chain was defective? Or perhaps I have stronger legs?

Did it break while you were shifting? Did it break at the power link? (the gold quick-connect link)?
Nitro had a chain break on Sunday's ride, the pins in a powerlink just sheared right off the plates. The plates were gone, the pins still in the chain.

New bike. Maybe the chain was defective? Or perhaps I have stronger legs? Could be. Chains are like any other part: light, strong, cheap. Pick two. The one you had was cheap and should have been strong because its not particularly light.

Keeping the drive train clean and lubricated works wonders.

KMC. Doesn't matter which one.
