why did i have to be smited because of my post? I realize it was more of a criticism, but i posted my criticism because i was confused why everyone loves it so much. That's just the way it is. Some people judge a trail by it's flow and smoothness. Others judge them by their difficulty. The trail is so new that it's going to have the bumps and holes in it for a while until it gets ridden in. All trails at FATS were bumpy as heck after they were first completed. Look at how smooth they are now.

"too bumpy" is a state of mind...... There are some hard sections in Keg, Lick Fork, Baker Creek, that involve lots of roots and maybe an uphill, but that should be looked at as another challenge. Of course the roots are easier with my C-dale full sus vs hard tail, but you young guys can take it. Try playing with a softer front shock on a rooty trail.

I didn't ride Modoc for the longest time because of all the descriptions of it being so technical. That isn't what I ride for, but I soon realized that I can work around the technical stuff I don't want to do and just enjoy the trail and scenery. Now days, I don't care where I ride,as long as I ride. I can walk over places I don't care to traverse on the bike.

My only gripe with bartrams was that one or two of the whoop dee dos seemed to be so narrow going down and then back up that it was almost a 'V', if that makes sense. You need to get up some speed and manual them whoops. I found the below on the net. Looks like the short bus group ride. Step 1 Prep. Make sure the bike fits you well before trying this. too big, good luck getting the wheel off the ground. too small, you go over backwards. Step 2 starting OK, have your feet in a neutral position, have your strong foot in front. Stand in the way you would coast, standing partly over the handle bars. Step 3 Doing it! so after you are in neutral position, lean forward violently, then pull back on your handle bars. use your brakes to slow or speed yourself up. Remember: Manuals are NOT wheelies. wheelies use pedaling to move, manuals use momentum. you can also cheat by pedaling yourself up to manual position, but leaning is easier. Step 4 the manual after you have fallen a few times you should have it down. Yee-Hah! Plenty of other links available. Neil, What tire pressure do you run? Anything above 40psi is way overkill and will rattle your fillings loose. so what you're saying is manual down and when you hit the uphill section its not as harsh bc the bike is already in that position? Just want to be clear. lol I ran 55psi at the new bartrams and didnt think it was too bad. I dont think its safe to run mine any lower than 40psi. I have a hardtail and I am a little young, I get some tenderness but it usually dissipates as I ride. If I could get rid of this back pain, I would be superb. At least the pain lets me know Im doing something!

On the back pain, google "core exercises" and do them. I should practice what I preach, but don't. I pay the price every so often with dibilitating back pain.

We are all very lucky to have such an awesome trail system so close by to our city. I know that is what I thought the day I stumbled across FATS. I was minding my own business, and low and behold, 25 miles of trail were there for me to ride. And then the really crazy thing happened. A few years later 10 more miles luckily appeared. We are so lucky.

I have never messed around with different tire pressures. I will drop them down and see if they make a big difference. I do stretches but I dont think they are enough or I am that out of shape. Ive already tried a new stem but it didnt help. Im going to keep riding regardless, hopefully I will figure out a solution.

Yeah 55 is WAY too high! You really do need to do some reading on mtbr. Every question you might have about tire pressure is answered there.
On my rigid 29er I run about 18psi in a 2.55" wide tire and 22psi in the rear 2.1" tire.

As far as the trail, Angela said exactly what I think, the longer it's been there the better it's become. I like the fact if you get to hot you can cool off in the lake, I did that 2 weeks ago. I might take a extra pair of sox and a small towel next time. I'm 240lbs, I run tubes and depending on the trail between 35 and 40 psi and snake bites have never been an issue. I just turned 50 and my back to gives my trouble and has given me trouble for 20 years, I've tried everything from seats, to shorts, to stems, to a different bed. Full supension and the new bed is the only that has helped at all. I use to blame it on riding a full rigid now I blame it on my birthdays. Keep riding, don't worry about keeping up with the Jones and have fun.

Tell them how much you weigh...cuz that's crazy low!!! Mr Panda...start at 40 and go from there. I promise nothing will go wrong. Maybe I won't promise, but unless you're over 200#, you'll be fine. Wait til MD gets home from prison, he'll tell ya.

Out on furlough! When I ran tubes, and weighed about 30 pounds more (255), I ran 44-46psi. Lost 30 pounds, switched to tubeless, and consistently run 32 - 36. I tried 26 - 28, but I could roll my tires off the rim on the sweet, tacky off-cambers at FATS. Not fun. As far as the manual comment by ted, that is a fun way to hit a bunch of the dips on the new Bartram. Feels like you are floating through them. Of course, don't tense up going through them either. Give the bike room to move under you. MD

why did i have to be smited because of my post? I tried to call out the perps several times, but they sit back and smite you one day, then shake your hand and enjoy the fruits of your efforts the next day. I try to not watch the results of it all, but it is enough to make you want to call someone out. Alas, this is the net and people can hide behind the keyboards all day long. MD

With tubes, I run right at 40 lbs - seems to do just fine.
The "speed bumps" will smooth out with time - there are at least 2 spots that I wouldn't have put as many but no problem.

MD I smite and exalt, although not often. I only do it for actions on this board. Not what one does off this board. If you're an idiot here, I will smite you. Although I do alot more exhalting. The MD out of prison line was one of the best I've read on here in a while. Thanks for the laugh.
