Yetichick and I both rode HKSP several times this weekend. Still a great trail. Lots of fun. Like I thought, it needs a good grooming. Hasn't had one in several years. Numerous one and two inch saplings have grown up within two feet of the trail, and they are causing most of the face-slappers that you will feel when riding. Saturday June 12th, 9am at the red barn. Eight volunteers minimum. We need to run both DR mowers. We also need a couple loppers coming in behind the DR mowers. Once again, Saturday, June 12th. Meet at the barn. One four-person group heads to the right, one heads off to the left. Please email or call and let us know you will be there! michael dot drawdy at comcast dot net 803 dash six three four - two nine seven one. MD

I am 80% in for this. Haven't ridden HKSP in 2+ years. But that is a just a good reason to go work on it. I'll probably ride it and or Plum Branch as well.
Only 80% because I have no idea if I am already committed to doing something with family.

Thanks BV and JT. So, now there are four of us, and that will get us started. Anyone who is up for a little challenge, sign up! The DRs can be run by one for hours, but it sure is nice to be able to swap out with another able-bodied individual every hour or so. If you can't run a DR, then we'll put some loppers in your hand and you can take out some face-slappers. MD

We've got enough to make this party a go. That's not to say that we couldn't use a couple more people though Could actually use two more DR runners. Marco, Mark Y, BV, JT, DP, Yetichick and myself so far. Three will head one way, three will head the opposite way. I was hoping to have two more, but this should get the job done. Start at the red barn at 9am Saturday morning. We will pre-stage some gas about the halfway point Friday night. Refill there, catch your breath, head back out. Meet back at the red barn. There will be some cookies and something to drink back there. If you have the energy left, go for a ride! MD

What a nice trail. Best views of all the trails we have.
That was the toughest loop I've ever done at HKSP. 4 hours to get around the Lake Loop. I flipped the DR twice but it seemed no worse for wear.
Good turnout. And the Lake Loop is in the best shape it has been in 10 years, probably since it was built.
Seven miles of hand built single along the lake. It has good flow and great views of the lake. Several places along the ride where swimming is 15 feet away. This trail is worth the drive from Augusta and nice diversion from the local rides.
Thanks for putting the day together. It was good to do this type of work again.
Wine/Turkey next? I am game. Might be 3 weeks before I can go though.

Man, talk about hot and muggy! I was pretty toasted by the time I got back to the parking lot. I told Dale I thought it was the yellow jacket sting that had me getting light headed and weak kneed; but after adding it up last night I know why. From the time I got up to the time I went to bed I drank 6+ liters of liquids (those cold beers after I got home added up!). During that time I peed about a pint. Dehydration without a doubt. I think everyone's clothes were soaked through and through with sweat.

I came home with someone's folding saw in my pack. Let me know how I can return it.

Thanks so much to every single person that showed up. I was humbled. We had ten people ready to do what it took to get seven miles of sweet singletrack cleared. Most I knew, some I did not. We started at 9:30am and most of us were done somewhere around 2 or 3, and it was above 95 degrees at that point. Add a little humidity to the mix... Thanks also goes out to the Greenwood group. Several showed up and helped myself and EdgeE repair a DR that kept throwing the chain when we were maybe 1.5 miles from the end. I was whooped and so was Eric, and the GW guys helped immensely. Rode the trail this morning. What a tremendous difference. Thank you to those that sweated head to toe yesterday, and to those that did not, well, it's all good! Go ride HKSP. MD

Several places along the ride where swimming is 15 feet away. This trail is worth the drive from Augusta and nice diversion from the local rides. My DR ran out of gas, and I told EdgeE I would hike the 1/4 mile to the staged gas cans. When I got back, he was dripping. He told me that he went out and scared some bass! Cool! MD

I rode HKSP Lake Loop and Turkey Ridge this morning. Very nice. Best in years. Ended up with about 19.5 miles with a trip around the lollipop loop at Plum Branch. It was hot and I was cooked. Done at noon.
It's only June. I'm scared of July and August.

I'd forgotten how nice HK is - haven't ridden it in several years. Trail is in primo condition. Good trail crew - We had the DRs, hedge trimmers, loppers and swampers all going at once.
