I found this on a google search. It's hard to argue against knee high socks. Notice cycling isn't listed. I think knee highs are being put to use by Cyclo-x'ers and urban hipsters. Not much in the mtb world and not yet in the pro peleton. I think the authors name was Therea Ghey? Knee high socks have been around for many generations. And many people wonder why? Because there is always a need to wear knee socks. No matter who you are or what you do, knee high socks can be worn for 6 major reasons. Reason 1 Knee socks can be worn to stay warm at a sporting event, when camping, skiing, shoveling snow, or for any other reason you might think your legs would be cold. Reason 2 One can wear knee high socks when playing sports. Many athletes wear them in various sports. Not only do they wear them as a protective shield for their calves, ankles and feet; they wear them to match their jerseys/uniforms. Some sports where Knee Socks are worn: Skating Rugby Skateboarding Softball Volleyball Soccer Cheerleading Basketball Baseball Football Roller Derby Kickball Lacrosse Reason 3 There are plenty of holidays that could require the need of knee high socks, such as: Halloween St. Patrick’s Day Valentine’s Day Christmas When you are invited to a Halloween party or if you are hosting a party, knee high socks could be incorporated into your Halloween Costume. You could include knee high socks into your outfit on St. Patrick’s Day. Whether it is warm or cold outside, knee socks could be used to accessorize your outfit. There are a few Leprechauns riding bikes out there. For your loved one on Valentine’s Day, knee high socks can be worn to add some romance into the evening. Need it say more? Reason 4 Many people wear knee high socks to accessorize their outfit. You can use knee socks to add style to an outfit with a mini-skirt, mini-shorts, capris, dress, jeans and even boots. They are also so cute and comfortable when you are just lounging at home in your PJ’s. Reason 5 Knee socks are widely used in the world of Entertainment. There are a variety of movies where this hot accessory is featured of sported. Reason 6 And of course wearing knee high socks Just Because!

cyclist are a funny lot, me included, i mean we wear spandex pants, shirts 2 sizes to small with syrofoam and plastic on our head and we are cool. But if nettles cover the earth the calf sock would be the advetisment canvas of the cycling world. LOL

Just my two cents worth on vines. I was riding the Croom 50 in Brooksville, FL a few years ago when a vine grabbed my helmet at medium speed and nearly took my head off (fortunately for me my helmet was all that the vine took off and I crashed out in sugar sand).
That is why I told Lowell about a similar vine on Tower last year in hopes that someone could remove it. I do not recall if it was gone when I rode it last weekend but I hope it gets removed before someone goes down. When riding CCW, it was on the downhill section along the gorge below the tower.

This is why everyone should have a small hand saw in their pack. They don't weigh anything, but they're super handy. You can get this one for cheap at Harbor Freight, or you can get a nicer one at Lowes/Home Depot for around $20. I use to have the $7 one and it worked great. Then I lost it, so I picked up a $20 one, because Harbor Freight didn't have any in stock at the time. The $20 saw has a 2" longer blade, both cut equally well.

Pack? My pack stays home 99% of the time. But it does have a saw in it.
