Did it rain last night around the Modoc trail? The tread was damp. I wasn't expecting that today.
Rode the connector with a friend of mine today. Ben has ridden Modoc lots of times, it was his first time on Turkey.
Jaws got Ben. Not sure exactly what happened, but the front tire pushed and he went down fast. His Camelbak took most of the fall, but he hit his hand on something and cut his ankle pretty good. Put my first aid kit to use for the first time. He cleaned it off, tried to put a big bandaid on, but it wouldn't stick, so he held it in place and wrapped it in guaze and taped it. Then we continued on. The bandage held the whole way...and good thing we covered that cut up, because we went thru a good bit of mud, and it would have been bad to sling that crap into an open wound.
I was really suprised at the mud. 99% of the tread was either bone dry or just slightly damp. But the dips had 6" of mud in them.
3.5 hours after we started into the Modoc trail we came rolling down HWY 23 and back into the parking lot. 3 other cars there, one person hanging out. Trey I think was his name? Or maybe Troy...anyhow, he had crashed hard in Jaws too. He's pretty sure he cracked/broke a few ribs. Said it hurt to breathe. Hope it heals soon...I bruised a rib last year and it was nearly two months before I could sneeze/laugh and not hurt.
Who else has gotten bit by Jaws?
EDIT: Also, whoever's cut out a bunch of downed trees on Modoc - THANK YOU!! There's still plenty left behind, but they're all riders. I enjoyed them.

I had hoped to ride with you guys today at 3:00, but I didn't get away until later. I started out on Modoc at about 4:30 and made it through JAWS without incident. Walking helps.
I was wondering if you were packing a chainsaw, with all the fresh cut timber. Someone did a great job, and left most of the fun riders.
I was at the dead end of 632A, debating if I wanted to turn around or keep on trucking, when I heard something loud heading towards me down the FS road. I was expecting a truck to round the corner, but it was JT and a couple of other guys doing about 45 mph. They were the only others that I saw out on the trail today.

Need to clarify what the connector is. Riding connector one way (Modoc to Turkey or vice versa) then riding the road back is called the "Cream Puff Connector". Riding the connector both ways out and back is "The Connector". Riding the connector both ways out and back and including Wine creek is called the "Connector with Special Sauce". I had a discussion with someone the other day regarding this topic. Hated to tell him he was wrong as these were pre-determined names many years ago and he had only just begun to ride. I thought we surely would have passed you (Dustin) coming back in on Modoc. Good ride yesterday except for one of our people decided to do a chest plant on the rocks in the second creek crossing heading out on Modoc. He had to walk it out from there. Also, the pollen isn't nearly as bad at Modoc. I'm guessing less pine trees? Branch/tree moving....you're welcome. Also other riders (I hope people stop to move things) and USFS had a hand in moving tree branches. ;D

What's the "official" way to connect Modoc to Turkey? I've used the powerline and crossed Steven's creek, but that cuts off about 1/3 of the begining of Turkey.

I haven't waded the creek in 15 year, I bet. Alot of stinging nettle in there for sure. There is a better spot to wade if you come off the powerline just before the creek. I only waded at the powerlines once, and at the other spot alot of times. That water can be cold in December. And deep. From Modoc: Legal route is staying on USFS Rds 632A and 632. Ride those around to the dirt road that the Modoc Speeday is on. Ride right in front of Speedway on pavement. Right on Mt Leb Church Rd. Right on Price's Mill. Right on FS 617. Right on FS 617A, take this to the end of Turkey Creek Trail. Enter the 2010 SMC and it will be marked for you, but in the other direction.

I thought it was the 3rd one. The first one has the big drop and is a 1/4 mile in.
The second one is about 1.2 miles in. And is easier than the third one.
The third one is about 2.3 miles out. Just after the switchback, and the bridge built in the wrong place. I thought that one would be called Jaws as it has the more jagged lines and is generally more difficult to ride.

I always thought of it as the second (but third as seenvic described its surroundings) about 100ft past the "Bridge to No Where" just read or heard somewhere that if you go over the bridge and keep riding it brings you out to a forest service road. I'll have to check it out some time. Alaways nice to make loops.

I'll have to check it out some time. Alaways nice to make loops. Over the bridge. Left. swings up the fall line to an old road bed. Take that to FS 632B. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it. And I have no idea if what you might find on the other side of the bridge. I haven't crossed it in years.

Yeah, that's a pic of the third creek crossing alright. Unfortunately, for the latest victim it wasn't the one he broke ribs in. He did it on the second (easiest of them all). Hence the gaper jersey comment.
The burn did quite a bit to clear out the brush from trails. However, along the immediate side of the trail in some locations, the fire didn't get to the grass. This will surely be a nuisance come 1 month from now and beyond.
Also, next time anyone is out there, note all the rock available along the trail in the woods. Especially after the 4 mile bridge.
