I may ride Keg trail for the first time Tuesday and got some questions. Where is best place to park our cars? Which is best way to ride Keg, CW or CCW? Are the creeks rideable? How many miles is the loop? Yes I know, I ask lots of questions.
Thanks!

Park at the main parking lot, just past the bridge. Ride CW - get on Washington Rd and ride across the bridge, and continue on to the area where people have pulled off the right side of the road..it's gravel/dirt, and a bit of pavement coming off the road. There's a post with a sign that has a hiker. The trail is maybe 20ft to the left of the sign. Follow the yellow blazes, a little less than 10 miles later you'll be back in the parking lot. Lots of roots. Lots.
The trail is mostly dry, but very wet in places. Some spots are deep. You'll get wet. Some of the creeks are rideable, some are not. Be prepared to walk/wade.
Have fun!

About 2/3 of the way around you'll come upon Boulder Creek Jerry. It's one of the most scenic spots on this trail. You'll be high above a creek that runs through some boulders below on the right. Enjoy the scenery!
Be safe!

Jerry,
Just make sure to follow the yellow blazes, There are a couple of spots where four wheeler trails intersect and it appears the bike trail should go that way but it doesn't. The trail is very well marked so if you watch the blazes you won't have any problems.
I clock just under 9 miles for the whole loop.
There is really only one spot where the water is somewhat deep. Probably 10-12 inches on Sunday. You just have to ride hard and you'll make it accross with no problem. Just after this you will follow the trail up to a doubletrack road. Turn right on this road and cross the creek at the bottom. About 50 yards up the hill the trail will turn right back onto singletrack. Sometimes this section is confusing the first time.
If JT goes along you'll be all set though.
Have a great ride.

I'd be interested in riding Keg Creek tomorrow afternoon. Maybe 2:30 or 3:00PM?

Thanks for the info, its really great to know some about a trail that you have not ridden before. Thanks again!
JT, we are going to ride at 11am. We will be there a little before and will hit the trail at 11. If you can make it then, great. If not we will catch a ride with you later. Anyone is welcome to join us.

I really enjoyed Keg Creek, very scenic. I liked the pine straw that seem to cover 2/3 of the trail. Trail has a different feel compaired to Horn, Bartram. I followed my plan and walked some of the deep water crossing to keep my feet dry. We saw fresh 4wheeler tracks. Really fun ride! ;D ;D ;D

We followed Jerry and Brian by a few hours yesterday- the trail is about as wet as I can ever remember, but it is in much better shape than Bartram; most wet places have hard bottoms and are not too muddy. I had 2 pairs of socks on and still had cold, wet feet at the end. Short but significant damage from a 4-wheeler after the boulder creek section.

JT, Luke and I blew off Keg today but the last 2 miles or so were in pouring rain - can't remember when I've been so worn out from trail work. Trail in great shape (wet now though) but with 3 or 4 trees down.

...but with 3 or 4 trees down. If'n you had a nice Stihl chainsaw you would've knocked those pesky trees out without batting an eyelash... MD

You would have had to been with us toting the thing.
Though maybe next time I can ride the bike pulling the BOB with saw and with the backpack blower on directing the stream of air ahead of the bike with one hand while holding the bike with the other hand. But I definitely will not do that at night!!!

Mark Y and I cleaned drains on Keg today. Man, I have never seen so much water out there - must have been 50 streams crossing the trail. Keg used to be the place to go when other trails were not rideable. Now there are many muddy spots and tons of water. Probably should wait at least a week after a rain before riding. We did, however, make many, many drain cleanouts but there is still much casual water in spots with nowhere to go.

No, Dale P cleaned drains today; I was there to offer advice and moral support. Hell, it was all I could do to hike that far much less do any significant work.... My wife is still laughing at me struggling to stand up from my chair.

Probably should wait at least a week after a rain before riding. With the amount of rain we had in '09 and the way this year is starting, that may become the new standard! I am worried also about Wine. We have had numerous water levels above the flood stage in the past six months or so, and that is all it takes to flood Wine...

I was going to wait a few days and go back on my bike to survey the deepest holes to see if the drains needed deepening any, but alas, it is supposed to RAIN again tomorrow...
