The contractor is well into the "extension" between Water Works Road and Petersburg. The extension is now closed and posted.

Talked to Deno the other day. He is done with tread work except for the parts that were too wet to work on when he was last there. He is also building the bridges now.
It will be ready for the Summit.
But he did ask me to get the word out that when it opens it is a new trail, with fresh tread built in the wettest winter we've had in a while. If is at all wet/soft please do not ride it.
Deno is a great guy who builds a great trail. I look forward to it.

I noticed the Saturday of the summit there will be a Bartram/Keg (I prefer to call it the Dam Keg Creek Dam Ride) will the extention be open before the summit?
ps this by the way may be the ride to celebrate my 40th in September. 40 miles for the 40th

I got a call Tues from COE - latest finish projection is April 30. Plus we're working hard to get the Wildwood section completely tuned up as well.

Got an e-mail from COE today. They and the contractor want to get wheels on the new section - Petersburg to Wildwood. As of yesterday, there were still 2 bridges left to install and there are several spots yet to finish. Two notes: 1) if you come to a wet spot, dismount and walk around 2) Don't advertise to the general public and be discreet if you enter from P'burg
We're getting real close!!

The new trail is awesome. Go ride it. From the main Keg Parking lot all the way to West Dam is 21 miles one way if you ride the Lake Springs loop. This is going to make a FANTASTIC big mile race course. This is all of Bartram (link only good till sometime in May)

Started to answer Dustin's post, then said WTH, let's hit it. It's been a few days since we were on it, and there was quite a bit of work to be done, so... ...The crew has been busy. Awesome bridges, great rollers, good dips, nice berms. I could have been on HKSP at one point, FATS on another, old Bartram on some. Not much climbing, but that is to be expected here. Awesome addition. Looking forward to the grand opening, and looking forward to riding it all, West Dam to Keg and back. MD

The new section is GOOD!!
I almost died at that rock garden/bridge thing. Heading towards petersburg, came in way to hot, drifted in the dirt ramp leading up to the rocks, ended up skidding to a stop sideways. Back tire was off the left side, front tire had dropped part of the way off the rocks...missing the ramp down. Hard to explain if you haven't seen it...it was scary. Almost went OTB on a bunch of rocks.
Was our ride tonight the first night ride on this section?

I nearly died Thursday at the same spot, same direction. Having already hit it twice before, I wasn't too worried about it. This time though I also decided to hit it pretty fast and drifted left. #%&@$#%# Said I. Didn't die. Didn't know how I stayed on the bike. Front tire ended up off the rocks. Camping there next weekend. Gonna get in some loooong rides! MD

It's giong to be interesting to see how that spot evolves...the dirt ramp is already falling apart. Probably end up with a step up onto the rocks. Could be cool. Crappy iPhone pic. See the dirt ramp? It leads to a 1 rock wide downward 'ramp' less than a foot wide. Since it sits over back side of the dirt ramp, you can't see it till you're right on top of it.

One more question: the long boardwalk, is it going to be hardware clothed? It needs it IMO. Even when dry, with all the pollen-makers from the pine trees, it's already slick. And yes, the official scientific name of those things is 'pollen-makers'.

Rode it this morning........like a kid Christmas morning!
Only problem, after I turned around at Wildwood the sky opened up. Didn't think it was going to rain 'til the afternoon. The rock bridge was sweet!
A big THANK YOU to the COE and the trail builders. Just an awesome ride.

Wanting to spend a weekend camping and riding trails. I know you guys may not want to give up the best campsite secret but, which campsite # is the best at Petersburg? Don't know what you are "camping" in, but there are very few bad sites at Petersburg. That is a great ACOE campground. We have stayed at 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9(next weekend), 22, 35, 36, 37, 44, 45, 54, 62, etc, etc. We shove in with a 34' fiver and have found everything they list very within the limits, and all within a minute or two of the trail. In short, there are no "best" sites. They are all within a very reasonable distance to trails. HOWEVER, if you really want the numero uno site, it is number one. You are fifty feet off the trail. MD

Thanks for the camping information. I have an 18' Coleman that fits most any site. Will try to secure a spot when my son gets out of college for the summer..

I noticed an SUV with trailer hitch mounted bike rack this afternoon parked at the Keg Creek WMA (white gate). Assumed it was a mtn biker heading into Wildwood to ride the new section of Bartram. Please give this trail a wide berth following rain. While the section headed East from WW was the first built, there are many short sections that were just finished in the last week or two. These pieces are very susceptible to damage after just moderate rainfall. I know everyone is itching to try this trail out but let's hold the horses for at least 48 hrs after rain.
Your comments and feedback are extremely valuable. Benchmark trails is going to revisit the rock skills area just off the Waterworks road and evaluate the width. Completion is now scheduled for mid-week.
