Slingshots have been around for along time. We named a section of the old Tower Trail "slingshot" because a local rode one and he built almost all the old Tower trails. This was almost 20 years ago. Turns out the section we named Slingshot was one of the few he didn't build. Our boy oddcouple owns 25 acres in this area and part of Slingshot runs thru his 25 acres.
I'd say there are plenty of companies who do make junk who have been around a long time (20+ yrs in this case). But their customers like to buy junk. Slingshot sells at the mid to high end and not at the junk (Walmart) end.
I am not surprised that you are surprised that the bike is a solid piece of trailworthy equipment. I look forward to riding it, although it is a size too big for me.

There is a guy living in the CSRA riding one, meet him riding the Rock a few months back, flat black is the color of his bike. Bought it a few months ago said he loves it.The first time I saw one was at the 1997 KNOB SCORCHER.Looks like they have made improvements around the pivot area.
Dustin how did you get such a cool side job?

My new ride, bought this one, it's not a test/review bike. Steel frame and fork, 2x10, room for 'big' tires, and came with painted to match metal fenders. Ill be using it for commuting to work, general road riding, and doing gravel grinder type rides (aka dirt road rides). Only put about 22 miles on it so far, been fiddling with the fit, but I think I've got it dialed in now. It ain't light (24.1lbs as pictured) but its oh so smoooooth. Looking forward to putting lotsa miles on it.

I was talking with Gator at the TT on Friday night about the bike, and he was trying to convince me to join them for a "little 200k" on Sunday to break it in. HA! He and some other crazy people rode from Evans to Brevard, NC and back a few weekends ago.... I should get a real shake down ride this coming weekend, somewhere around 40 miles of mostly dirt roads.

I had plans to do that 200k Saturday, but they fell through and I'd already made plans when I heard about the Sunday alternative. You vill be assimilated!

New life from an old rig. Built my old DB Topanga SE up as a SS for putting around the neighborhood. I've actually had it built for a couple of years now but never really ridden it. I took it down from the wall last night to dust it off and tinker with it some more to get it usable so I could start riding to work. After airing up the tires, making a few adjustments and tweaks here and there, I took it for a spin this morning and had a blast. It's no super lightweight, but much lighter and more responsive than my Trance. What a kick in the butt. ;D Attachments:

Just built up two weeks ago, still need large volume tires, and I've further modded those crossmarks for more temporary grip. The chain ring is close, I had to add 2.5mm spacer to drive side spindle to get space.

Updated pics of my SS. Had it powder coated black over at Jimmy Rivers Performance Works, a local go-kart racing shop. HIGHLY recommended if you've got a bike that needs a little refreshing. He did a good job and the price was beyond reasonable, $100 including removing the old finish! Price may vary depending on the style bike and material of course.

I worked for a bike shop for a while, we had a nickname for Cannondale. It was crack and fail. This was back when they gave us the wonderful Cannondale Raven. It was a beautiful LOOKING bike, but that's all it had going for it. I know they are charging more for their bikes these days, but Specialized has some of the best bikes out there. Trek/Garry Fisher, Scott, and GT all make a superior product in my honest opinion. If you have loads of money, Pinarello has just entered the mountain bike market as well. If there skill at building road bikes carries over to their mountain bike line, we just may see the greatest mountain bike made to date. I admit to being a specialized fan boy, but their innovations such as "the brain shock" really do work. Cannondale innovates with a head shock they later convert to a lefty fork because they could only fit about 3 inches of travel in the old head shocks. It is a square peg in a round hole surrounded by wheel bearings they claim has less "stiction" than a fork from say Fox or Marzocchi.

Specialized's business tactics are less than desireable. "Litigate or Die" They do make some good stuff though. Well, they design good stuff, they don't actually make anything themselves. I like their shoes and tires, and I know people LOVE the Epics and I'm intrigued by them as well. Trek/Fisher had a long run of frames breaking (HiFi). Cannondale has way too much proprietary stuff IMO, and when Dorel bought them and moved production out of the USA to overseas the prices didn't go down a bit. GT isn't what it once was. Pinarello is just crazy expensive, and the frames are still made in Taiwan by someone else like most other brands, and their MTB is gimicky IMO. Giant actually makes their own stuff (and a lot of others stuff too). They have their own aluminum foundry, and weave their own carbon. I had an '06 Anthem I really liked a few years ago, and if I were in the market for a DS the newer ones would be on the short list, along with the Epic. More and more I'm drawn to the smaller brands though, especially the handbuilt stuff. My next bike will say Zukas on the downtube Back to pics of bikes! Here's my On-One Scandal in it's latest form, with a rigid fork since I broke my Terralogic and don't want to spend the money to fix it. 22.56lbs without the frame bag. This was set up for ORAMM, the framebag held a tube, multitool, chain quicklinks, derailleur hanger, and food. Makes it easy to get to food while riding, and keeps stuff out of jersey pockets. Kind of a pain getting a bottle into the cage on the DT though.
