I awoke at 2 am this morning fully locked up with cramps in both legs.
Fifty something miles, about half high quality singletrack, some old school bushwhacking, a route from LCHT to HKSP I've never taken before made for an excellent ride.
Tom Austin, John Pace, Drew Howlett and I started at "big rock" on the Long Cane Horse Trail. This allowed us to ride a good loop on the LCHT before riding to HKSP. A few miles in we picked up 2 more riders who would only be riding the LCHT w/ us. Rode from Big Rock to 505/506 and then to the junction. We took an old school route to Fell of gravel and an old section of motorcycle trail I haven't been on in 10+ years. I don't think anyone has been either.
We got to Fell and rode the stuff we built back to Big Rock. On this section Tom's pedal breaks and is stuck to his shoe and not his bike. Damn. Four of us stayed on the single and two took the gravel back to the truck. A neighbor of Tom's in Greenwood ran a bike out to Tom and he switched pedals and we were back on. Tom is the only one who knew the planned route to HKSP so he was key to having on the ride. I can't say enough about the LCHT. It is just a lot of fun.
We crossed the metal bridge to gravel and then really old and hardly used sections of the LCHT to Parson's Mtn Lake. Across the damn, and up a tough climb to 515. Finally made it to the first rest stop in about 4 hours and about 27ish miles. (Tom had put out food and water the night before in two spots.)
Then about 18 miles of pavel. Probably 60% paved and 40% gravel. Traffic free except for the road HKSP is on. Someone about 14 miles into this section, the bottom fell out for me. Any uphill became Alpe de Huez. I struggled into the second rest stop. And ants had gotten into the sandwiches. John Pace ate one anyway.
We pushed on to HKSP and turned into Turkey Ridge at the green box. Down to the right, and to the barn. I had had enough and rolled toward my car parked at the lodge. The other three were more game and did the Lake Loop. I turned into Beaver Run and rode about half of it, bailing at a the rock piles where it gets close to the road.
I figured it was about 50-53 miles for me and 57-60+ for the other three. This could be a hundred mile loop starting at HKSP and riding to LHCT and back. This was a great ride. Tom did a great job setting up the route and putting out food and water.
I then headed back to the barn and picked up a fully emaciated female pit bull. She is a sweet dog. We've fed her and will take her to the vet on Monday. I'd guess she is about 1-2 years old and it looks like she had pups not long ago. No sign of the pups and as bad as shape as she is in, we didn't see how they could be alive anyway. If anyone wants to rescue a female pit bull, let me know.
I'll say again, do yourself a favor and go ride the LCHT. It is the shiznit.
