After living in the CSRA for 3 years I finally went to Hickory Knob. I was blown away. This is by far the most scenic trail, in my opinion, in the CSRA.
Trail seemed to be a little old school. Narrow, some root, some rocks, some dips, a few small climbs and down hill sections and a few rock drops. In numerous places the trail seemed to be clinging to the hillside with the lake below.
I will have to head back soon.

That is a handbuilt trail for ya. All 7 miles etched out with a pulaski/mcleod/adze.
A mile a month was major progress back then.

Glad you found this gem, Brian. ;D It is beyond a doubt my favorite trail. We camp there probably a dozen times a year. If you want a chuckle, you should read my review of it on mtbr.com from 12/24/2001.
The best way to enjoy this trail is to camp there. Nice facilities. Direct trail access from the camp sites. Go ride Turkey Ridge and Lake View Look. Head over by car to Greenwood and ride Long Cane Horse Trail since it is only 20 minutes away. If you are feeling adventurous, ride Baker Creek. Accessible by bike if you pack some food, or just drive over there (five miles).
Oh yeah, if you are camping at HKSP, call Michelle's Pizza in McCormick. Great pizza, and they deliver to your campsite!

Since we had some weather overnight I decided to go to HKSP and ride the Lake View trail. Great trail ! Very different. Not a trail you can rip at high speed (OK so I really dont ride fast anyways but hey...) and definately a trail you need to keep your eyes open at it gets tight and a few technical spots as well. Decided to just go for it over the rock ledge drop even though I was just going about .5 miles an hour. Also hit the rock drop after that (CW) at a decent speed. I dont ride fast and this was the first time riding this trail so I took it pretty easy but that second rock drop was not one to stop before it and walk.....just got back a little and let it ride ;D . Anyways glad I took the ride and found another great trail in the area and gave FATS a break.

I had the opportunity to see Modoc for the first time yesterday and it is a very nice trail too. It is very technical for sure, but that shouldn't keep anyone from riding; just walk the stuff you don't care to chance breaking your neck on. It is worth it just for the scenery.
