Wow! What a weekend we just had!! The long awaited Sumter Metric Century took place Saturday, May 16th with 61 racers taking part. I'm absolutely certain this will become an annual event!
It was fun trying to tackle the registration table to get everybody signed in and number plates issued. I made mistakes but I tried my best. Many thanks to Barbara for showing me the ropes and to Vicky for being my most able assistant! Thanks to all who patiently waited in line too.
I want to make a special call out to Tyler Funk who reminded me later when things slowed down that I forgot to collect his entry fee. Your honesty is greatly appreciated Tyler!
It's been great reading all the posts describing the challenges and rewards of participating in the race. I'm very proud of everybody who finished the race no matter the finishing time. I'm even more impressed with the folks who rode in the SMC and then also rode in the Lock to Lock the next day! These people just have crazy legs!

Congratulations to all the folks who took home the coveted SMC tumbler!
Speaking of the Lock to Lock Ride, there were approximately 200 riders participating yesterday including yours truly as a first timer.
We were fortunate enough to escape the rain on the way to the Lock and Dam Park but it hammered us pretty good on the way back to Savannah Rapids Pavilion. The food was great and the riding was fun! Thanks so much to Andy and Drew Jordan and everyone else at Andy Jordan's Bicycle Warehouse along with all the volunteers who put on this great annual event!
Many thanks to DSM Chemical for opening the gate at Sand Bar Ferry Road to allow access to the dirt road that runs behind the plant straight to the park. From what I understand, this is the first time that's happened in 17 years of Lock to Lock Ride history. Folks are working behind the scenes to see about making that gate go away for good. Cool.
A shout out to Mark Y for being my riding partner and keeping us on pace with your bike computer. I greatly enjoyed the conversation and your companionship.
Many of you, like me are in recovery mode after a good long ride this weekend. A lot of us pushed beyond limits to accomplish new riding goals. Some felt the thrill of competition in testing their skills against other racers. Some went as far as they could go and decided that was enough. Others just wanted to go on a relaxing ride with friends and family. But I bet everybody that got on a bike this past weekend is glad they did no matter how far or how fast they rode. And that is the point of climbing aboard the saddle.
One thing I know for sure after this weekend is this...the CSRA is a great place to live if you're a bike rider!
Be safe!
