I rode Deep Step this afternoon wearing my Bike Patrol jersey and with the Bike Patrol plate on the front of my bike.
Right off the bat, someone asked if I had a high pressure air pump so they could air up their fork. I was happy to oblige. Not too far into the ride I came upon a couple of guys riding with no helmets. I suggested they get helmets if they are going to ride the trails at FATS. They said okay. Cool.
While I didn't have to assist in any medical emergencies or offer any first aid, it was comforting to know I had my first aid gear with me in case I needed it.
I took my time riding the trail stopping at all the mud holes to carry my bike across. I'm still fussy about the new carbon bike I guess. But stopping frequently gave me a chance to clear out some drains and set a comfortable pace for the ride.
It was nice to have Bill Victor ride up on me and share a few minutes talking about the trails and our bikes. We said our "see ya laters" and he was gone. Man that guy can ride fast and he probably wasn't even trying hard. Nice to see you again Bill.
I figured I would feel a sense of satisfaction being there as a patroller ready to offer any help I could. I was right. And being able to assist and educate other riders is what it's all about.
I'm looking forward to getting some new patrollers trained to join the ranks of myself and the other folks who've recently joined. I'm pretty sure they'll feel good about it too.
Hope to see ya on the trail. Be safe!
