Rode Horn today, and explored some gravel roads in the Lick Fork area. The trail is in good shape, a few trees down, but no mud. There's plenty of places where there's an inch of water on top of the trail, but the tread is firm.
At one of the gravel road crossings, there's a section of the road that's paved just a short distance from the trail. I had noticed it before and wondered why that ~70 yards of the road was paved...I found out today. About 30 yards of that section was under water! So, of course I had to ride through it. It didn't look deep. Next thing I know, I'm in strong cross current and it's a bit deeper. My entire drivetrain is underwater!! Got to the other side, had a good laugh, then came back across, where I was riding against the current. I had to get in my granny gear!!
It was fun. Kinda stupid. I really had no idea how deep it was, and the current was strong. My bike hates me now.

And rightly so. Looks like you git to do some luvin on yer hubs. Watch out for that freehub body. I had to replace a guys entire wheelset and drivetrain today due to his "Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" moves. He did this at least a dozen times over the winter and then complained about a grinding noise in his drivetrain. "Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go on an overnight drunk, and in 10 days I'm going to set out to find the shark that ate my friend and destroy it. Anyone who wants to tag along is more than welcome." "Oh, sheep! Swamp leeches. Everybody, check for swamp leeches, and pull them off... Nobody else got hit? I'm the only one? What's the deal? " Gosh I love that movie.

That IS my favorite movie.. Some people don't get it, but I love it! Now about that drivetrain.. That's a different story...

This must be where the road crosses Horn Creek near the end of section 2. Was it concrete vs asphalt? If so there are a couple of marker poles (actually 3" dia. tube steel) to gage the depth. The poles are marked w/ yellow bands @ 1 foot increments. When I use this route home from Lick Fork, and Horn Creek is running over the roadway, the depth of the water @ the poles lets me know how fast to go ;D, or turns me around. Be careful because the marker poles are not the lowest elevation, it is about 3 inches lower.

As I think about it, I seem to remember the marker on the far side (if going from the trail) was damaged & removed a few years ago. So, there may be only one.

I know there was one pole, 'cause I leaned my bike against it and took some pictures on my phone (can't post 'em here tho...DOH!). The pole wasn't underwater though.
Started getting into my hubs today, discovered they're cartridge bearing hubs, not loose-ball. (I've never really looked at them too closely before....) Got the dust caps off expecting to find a bunch of nastiness, and was relieved to find the bearings perfectly clean with a little virgin clean grease. No overhaul needed!! Now my cranks on the other hand..may be a different story. Going to start tearing them apart tomorrow. They spin freely, but I can hear a scraping noise.
