Just a reminder from my boo boos Always ride with a helmet and when possible with someone else. Case in point I went for a nice little ride this morning. Haven't rode Deep step since early spring really has been my least favorite trail. Thought I would give it a shot. Was really having a blast was crossing the last power line crossing ccw a little steep slope with some rocks not a lot of speed and the next thing you know over the handle bars eating dirt when I thought it was all over the bike came down on the back of my head. Totally convinced if it was not for the helmet I would have been knocked out or worse. Big dent in the back of the helmet blood oozing from my elbow but other than that OK I think. So guys and gals never never never think your to cool for a helmet and try to ride with someone I was by myself called my wife and said if I am not out in 45 min. to an hour come looking for me. Deep step rocks always where a helmet and try to keep the rubberside down. Bob

Definitely always helps to have another person along - at the very least they can direct the body recovery unit if need be! We knew a guy that was by himself and broke his femur out at Modoc at Jaws - I think that is about 2.5 miles out and he had to get himself out and did not have a cellphone. You just never know when something might happen. With our group the injuries have come when least expected ................generally when someone is JRA!

I usually have to ride alone or not at all. All my friends have seenvic on speed dial in case I don't check in on time.

When riding by myself I leave with my wife where I am riding, trail name, where I am parking and when I will be home. I also call when I am out of the woods. If something happens at least there will be a known place to start looking.
As for helmets I always wear mine. Very helpful when you hit one of those low hanging limbs.

Great suggestions and to add to that you might want to leave a name of another mountain biker so if the person you have left the information with doesn't know the trail location, etc they can call that other mountain biker and at least get help with where to go and probably some wheeled help to go help find you!

Was riding Deep Step CCW this AM... I came up on the sharp left turn about a mile in a the bottom of the big jumps... Endo'ed my bike, sending me head first into the trees. Dented and cracked my helmet. I hurt my back and every joint on my left side (Shoulder, Elbow, knee, and Ankle) But by back by far hurts the worst. My Tachometer says I was heading 28mph when it happened. I am sitting her on my couch typing this with a neck brace on... but I might not be tying at all if I hadn't had a "Quality" helmet.
I'm going to wait till Monday, and if doesn't feel any better then I might go get it x-rayed.
I was riding with a parter, but if you are not... Make sure you let someone know where you are riding, and when you expect to be "out of the woods"

Last Sunday my boy and his friend and myself were riding Skinny and Brown wave. Somewhere in the first part of Skinny I went down. Hit my head just above my right eye. Nose and teeth were all bleeding as well as my left knee has a pretty good loss of skin. After the wreck I could not remember what I had done earlier or anything about the wreck. I could not remember what trail we were on. After some time I figured out what trail we were on but had to ask about what I had done that day and I have know clew where this happened on the trail. Just a little reminder how dangerous mountain biking can be and we need to be very careful.

After riding Tsali many times... been to Seattle, Lake Tahoe, Palm Springs, Virgina and many other pretty hardcore trails. It is easy to get comfortable on trails like FATS. But it just goes to shows you have to respect any and every trail.
FYI: Back is feeling somewhat better today. I can now get out of bed without my wifes assistance. YEAH!!! baby steps...

Dang man that sucks. Just do what the doc' says and heal up quick!
Let this serve as a warning to everyone else: besides wearing a helmet (imagine what would have happened to quiver if he wasn't wearing a helmet...) and letting someone know where you are, folks, please, ride within your ability! I know too many people (my self included) who have pushed too hard too quickly and end up injured, and often times off the bike for months at a time. It's not worth it. If you want to get faster (and who doesn't?) take baby steps.
Use the brakes today, ride tomorrow!
(quiver: I'm not trying to jump on your case or anything, trust me, I know, s*** happens sometimes. get better quick!)

3 Long Months later... my doctor cleared me to ride again!
Good news is I had plenty of time to rebuild my bike.
I doubt it, but is FATS going to be open this weekend? if not, how does Lick Fork look these days...
I'm also looking forward to helping out at one of the work parties... now that I am of use again.

Had a buddy go down on Great Wall today. He managed to land with his right leg on one of the tree trunks on the side of the trail. It sliced his shin open 6 inches by 4 wide, broke the bone in two spots and helped us better understand what muscles look like when the skin is peeled back. He was in tough shape, even at the hospital before surgery.
Always good to ride with others, may mean the difference in keeping a limb, staying alive or not having a truly agonizing exit to the trail head if even possible to move. Cell phones are good too, just make sure you know how to direct 911 to the FATS area. I used road names and it still took a little bit to get an exact fix for the closest responders.

Very scary! So, exactly how did the accident happen? How did he end up landing on a tree trunk?
