A few pics from todays ride, it was great out there!! At the first creek crossing going down the rock drop dsquared took a took trip over the bars and landed hard on his shoulder. After he had a moment to collect himself, he got back up, and like a trooper he tried it again. Made it look easy. Just like this picture makes it look easy (don't you hate that?!). After seeing this picture I have a theory about that right handed line, and why people tend to go OTB there (I've seen two people do it now). I always go down the left side of the rock, and have never felt like I was even close to going OTB. Check out dsquared's rear wheel, there's a bump there. So as the front end is dropping, and your weight is going forward, that bump is pushing the rear wheel UP. I think that's what screws people up. It's a theory anyways. breynolds enjoying the awesome weather dsquared going down the switchback dsquared was the only one of us brave enough to try this ditch. He didn't make it, but came close. Another attempt breynolds on the 4 mile bridge (aka the Bridge of Death) At the end of the trail dsquared decided to take the road back to his car, his shoulder was stiffening up and hurting. Hopefully it's nothing serious dude. Breynolds and I took the trail back to the car. Ran into Catalyst and his lady friend in the parking lot where he told me going up the rock at the first creek crossing is "super easy" with his new 29er. They even got it on video, so I can't wait to see that. He said it's all momentum, just go fast. Sounds easy enough.... I've never made it up that rock. Tried it, even came really close, but never really cleaned it. Catalyst is the only person I've seen ride up it, tho I have heard stories of others doing it. Great day out the woods. Lovin' this spring weather.

Next time I'll carry the camera so we can get some action shots of dgaddis. He flew over a rather large log, with an extra 4-5'' between his rear tire and the top of the log. Nice. Once the adrenaline/endorphins wore off (~5.5 miles), I could barely move the shoulder. Not sure I could pick my nose if I had too. I don't think anything is broken but my whole upper arm is gonna be sore for a while. Great day for a ride.

These came out better than I thought they would, still not great since my photography skills leave a lot to be desired! Dgaddis approaching: Dsquared pops the back wheel up: Dgaddis, same tree on the way back: Great ride and beautiful weather! @dgaddis and dsquared: I have higher-res versions of these if you are interested.

Crossing the first creek on the way out... Outstanding!!! I'm inspired. As soon as I can move my arm, I have to go back and try harder.

Thanks guys. I'll be honest, going the other direction the roots on the climb out are a pain! I went down the rock, and crossed the creek a few times, but those roots on the climb out got me every time.

That was smooth. The few times I've seen that ridden, it has never looked so smooth.
I gotta work on that spot both directions.
Great pics by all. Thanks.
edit to add: In the pics of Catalyst going up the rock, the rock looks much smaller than it seems in the wild, at least to me.

Depends on what you mean by heal. If you mean quit hurting, mine took a couple of weeks (I got grade III going over the bars on canal trail four or five years ago). Standard advice is to take it easy for a few weeks after the injury, but I don't think I followed that advice. I think I rode the weekend after I did it. It might have been smarter not to ride but I got away with it.
In terms of the joint healing, without surgery, there will always be a lump there where the end of the collar bone doesn't quite meet up with the shoulder blade, but it won't affect function of the shoulder. Surgery probably isn't worth the risk of infection/other complications just to get the lump to go away. Shoulder separations are graded 1-6, with 1 being mild end of the spectrum. Grade 5 and 6 usually require surgery because there are usually other injuries to the muscles and tendons that need repair.
My left separated shoulder actually hurts less than my normal right shoulder when I am lifting weights.

I still have the "lump" on my left shoulder from the separation, but it has never bothered me. I was given the option of surgery but was advised against it due to the reasons you stated. MD

Welcome to the club. Even though it's not one you prefer to join. Although I think my shoulder seperation hurt worse than my broken clavical. You'll be back in no time.
I hate it when they said riding was okay but just whatever you do, don't fall on it again for 4-6 weeks. Do you know how difficult it is ride trying to "NOT" do that.
Just ride and enjoy but walk the tricky stuff for a bit.
